The best sights of Stuttgart with photos and descriptions. Architectural sights of Stuttgart with photos and descriptions

In my opinion, Stuttgart is real in miniature. If you want to see moderne Industriestadt (modern working quarters), business centers, half-timbered houses (frame houses, which you probably met somewhere in Germany, Poland, Belgium or Holland), and Renaissance, classicism architecture in one day , and German vineyards, and to see businessmen dining on the grass, you are here. In general, Stuttgart, the capital of the state, seems to me a reflection of Germany: it is truly German.

All guidebooks say that this is an "extraordinarily green city", but, to be honest, it seems so only from a bird's eye view, and then due to the vineyards and hills with which it is surrounded. On the central streets, especially in the Old Town, there is not much more greenery than in Düsseldorf or Cologne. Maybe we thought so because we went to Stuttgart from a very small student Tübingen (45 kilometers to it), of course, shrouded in greenery, like all small towns.

Stuttgart is unique in that you can choose a landmark for the mood with which you woke up: if you want - look at Rembrandt, if you want - at the Mercedes Museum, if you want - sit with a cup of coffee near the Hegel Museum and think about reason and reality, and in the evening drink yourself a beer with bretzels.

How to get there

Of course, the most reasonable way to get to Stuttgart from any city in Russia (except, perhaps, Kaliningrad) is by plane. However, those who are afraid to fly or save money have the opportunity to take a bus from Moscow, find fellow travelers with their own transport, or use the railway (which is much less convenient).

Moving within the country: if you are traveling in Germany and have enough time, I advise you to use land transport: bus or train to see the whole country (only ranks 62nd in the world in terms of territory, which means moving will seem insignificant). Otherwise, you can use domestic flights: fly on a small buzzing (you won’t be able to sleep, and you won’t have time) airplane.

By plane

There are direct flights to Stuttgart only from Moscow: the flight lasts about 3.5 hours. From other Russian cities Aeroflot offers connecting flights with a transfer in the capital.

From Moscow

Carriers change regularly, as do ticket prices. The cheapest direct flights to this moment offers Aeroflot: about 155 EUR (10 000 RUB) one way, regardless of the season.

Truly cheap flights offered by the largest Greek carrier Aegean Airlines, but usually with a very long transfer in Athens (spend about a day on the way!). But the price, on average, is 60 EUR (4,000 RUB) lower than that of Aeroflot.

Even last year there were no flight offers from Stuttgart from the Greek airline, and two years ago Aeroflot did not make direct flights, and we had to fly through. So I highly recommend to stay tuned. It is convenient to watch offers using special aggregator sites that you all probably know, or.

From St. Petersburg

If you are flying from St. Petersburg, it is wiser to take advantage of the offer Aeroflot. The Russian carrier offers connecting flights, so you will definitely not have any difficulties with a flight from Moscow, even if the flight between two Russian cities is delayed.

In addition, you will spend about 7-8 hours on the way, while planning your own connection (between flights of two different airlines), you will allow more time for unforeseen circumstances. Such a flight will cost 206 EUR (12,000 RUB) in economy class.

There is only one airport in Stuttgart and it has an excellent electronic portal to help tourists, where you can:

  1. check the flight schedule;
  2. find out the phone numbers of the services of interest;
  3. receive background information;
  4. find a map of the airport or the required location (a specific cafe, check-in counter, smoking room, etc.).

The only drawback of the site: despite the fact that it can be opened in the English version, the maps remain with German inscriptions. But Google translator or Yandex will solve your problem.

How to get from the airport to the center

In fact, Stuttgart Airport is very small, and it will not be difficult to navigate the place, there are signs everywhere.

I did not need to use the site, although it may be calmer for someone.

Website search example:

From the airport to the main station (Hauptbahnhof) electric train(S-bahn), tickets for it are easy to get on arrival at the terminal. By the way, if group rates apply to it, you can team up with other tourists.

Trains run every 20 minutes on weekdays and 30 minutes on weekends. Expect to spend about half an hour on the way. If you arrive at night, pay attention to the fact that the S-bahn operates almost in the mode of the Moscow metro: the last train leaves at 00:00, and in the morning on the Stuttgart railway starts at 5:00.

You can also get from the airport by bus or by taxi. Buses run near the exits from the arrivals area, and since their schedule is related to the arrival of aircraft, you will surely catch one that will take you to the right part of the city. Upon arrival in Stuttgart, we went straight to, so we took route number 828. If you don’t know how to ask where the bus goes or just don’t know which part of Stuttgart you need, go to Hauptbahnhof, it is located almost in the very center and From there it is convenient to start an overview of the city.

If you are going to go by taxi, there is no need to call a car in advance, unless you need additional equipment such as a child seat. Taxis are on duty at the exits at any time of the day, and the cost (about 10 EUR to the city center) is fixed, that is, it will not depend on whether you ordered a car in advance or agreed on the spot.

Be careful! We almost never saw large cars, like minibuses, which means that if you travel big company, it will be cheaper to call a car. It will cost you about 15 EUR (more budget than two small sedans).

By train

From Moscow

There are no direct trains from the capital to Stuttgart. There are two options offered by railroad sites:

  1. a route with a change in Paris (on the way for a day or 1.5 days, depending on the chosen time, several trains depart from the Belorussky railway station per day);
  2. a direct flight to Frankfurt am Main (on the way a little more than a day, the cost is about 100 EUR (6,800 RUB)).

In the first case, you arrive in Stuttgart right at the Hauptbahnhof (read, to the city center), but you have a connecting train in Paris, which, of course, is not very convenient. In the second case, you will have to travel around Germany for about 200 km (respectively, if you travel by S-bahn, you get the same transfer.

According to one of the train ticket search engines, there are Express train No. 23, which runs only 10 hours, and the price for it is 2 thousand less.

From St. Petersburg

Residents are offered to travel on the same train northern capital: a trip by rail with a transfer in Moscow will cost them 114 EUR (7,000 RUB) (including all fees).

Unfortunately, Petersburgers are not offered a trip to Stuttgart itself with one change (for example, in Paris). You will have to get through Moscow or Orsha (the train journey takes 1 day 12 hours) and you can only get to Frankfurt.

How to get from the station to the center

Stuttgart's main railway station is located in the city centre, north of historical center, where all the museums and other Sehenswürdigkeiten (that is, "attractions") are located.

From the station along Königstrasse you can get directly to the main Palace Square, it takes about 7 minutes to walk.

tourist streets

Stuttgart is not one of those cities in which tourist streets form separate routes along which you can walk all day long. This is the usual german city with two good museums. If you are interested in the city center, then here it is on the map:

What to see in 1 day

When choosing attractions that are worth a visit, I am guided by three principles:

  1. Uniqueness (Choose what I will not see anywhere else in the world. The wine museum is great, but winemaking in Germany, isn't it a joke? I wish everyone to visit the plantations of Spain, where in almost every province you can enjoy excellent wine and listen to a wonderful tour at the local wine museum ).
  2. "Business card" (You must definitely visit the object that is depicted on postcards, like eiffel tower or Cologne Cathedral).
  3. The value of the exposition (between an art gallery with a good collection and a house-museum, I choose a gallery, because the life of all writers and thinkers of the same era is identical (no offense to the museums of Hegel in Stuttgart, Beethoven in Bonn, etc.), but on understanding Beethoven's music or Hegel's conclusions, visiting the apartment will have little effect.

Food. What to try

Since Stuttgart is the capital of Baden-Württemberg, the national Swabian dishes that you can try there are common throughout the land:

Intermediate level

In Stuttgart, you can find mid-range restaurants with both European and traditional cuisine. Such establishments (except pubs) usually open in the morning, unlike expensive restaurants where you can only dine. Lunch here will cost you 10-15 EUR, dinner - 20 EUR.

  • pub Gaststatte zum Paulaner(Calwerstrasse, 45, Rotebühlplatz U-bahn station, city center). I have been here and would come back again. Paulaner beer is a Bavarian brand and this restaurant is a typical German brasserie. But, if you came to Germany for a short time or are not going to go further to Munich, you should definitely come here. You can try local Swabian beer in any cafe in the city, and here you will be served a wonderful Bavarian drink and a set of traditional Swabian dishes: cabbage with veal sausages, knuckle or potato salad, in a word, the choice is very rich. Prices are more than moderate (about 20 EUR per dinner), the audience is mostly German, often local, there is always not enough space. The waiters speak poor English, but you always have the option of pointing your finger at the menu.
  • Brenner(Brennerstr., 5.) A small, very cozy restaurant with good German cuisine, the main disadvantage is a very small selection of dishes. The price of lunch is about 10 EUR.
  • Der rote Hirsch(Marktstr., 46 (Canstatt)) Restaurant with local cuisine. I've only heard positive things about this place.
  • Pizzeria Restaurant FUXXE(Fuchswaldstr., 56) An Italian restaurant where the food is as good as in Italy. Ideal for those who are tired of the local color.

Expensive

There are many good restaurants in the city, and each entices you with either a stunning view or original local cuisine. If you walk around and try the same traditional dish in different restaurants, you will realize that it is not so “traditional” because they cook it differently everywhere (yes, including potato salad). But I would advise you to ask for a dish from the chef, or a “calling card” of a particular institution, because “something national” is served here without stopping to a large flow of tourists, and this way you will have the opportunity to taste something new.

  • cube(Kleiner Schlossplatz, 1) The restaurant on Palace Square, with a gorgeous view of the Zemsky Assembly building, is located on the roof of the Museum of Modern Art (on the top floor of a glass building). The perfect panorama good weather. The place is perfect for captivating a companion. Local and European cuisine.
  • Weinstube Am Stadtgraben(Stadtgraben, 6) My favorite local restaurant in the Bad Cannstadt area. (The name of the restaurant is enough for the taxi driver to take you where you need to go). There are two important points:
    1. the institution opens only at 18:00, so you won’t be able to dine here;
    2. A table on public holidays needs to be booked a couple of days in advance. But it's really delicious here!
  • Zum Ackerbuerger(Spreuergasse, 38) An old-fashioned restaurant with a traditional flavor, also open only for dinner (at 18:00). Expect to spend around 40 EUR here and the whole evening.
  • Wielandshohe(Alte Weinsteige, 71) Interesting restaurant on the hillside (only minus: far from the center, but there is free parking in case you come with your car. But it's better not to do this, as excellent wine is served here :). Opening hours: from 12:00 to 14:00 and from 18:00 to 22:00.

For dinner in one of the establishments of this class, you will give from 30 EUR to infinity.

Holidays

Big festivals are held here twice a year: in the fall a beer festival, and in the spring a spring festival. These days one wonders how such a relatively small city can accommodate so many guests. Every autumn about 4 million people come to the holiday (for comparison, the population of Germany: 81 million, which means, conditionally, every twentieth inhabitant of Germany comes here in early October).

locals and the authorities are very proud of the long tradition of festivals. There is even one that counts down the days until the start of the holiday.

Safety. What to watch out for

Stuttgart is a very quiet city despite being big.

The German metro, unlike the Spanish one, does not have a particularly large number of thefts, although I urge you to be vigilant, especially on festival days. (However, I am describing the situation at the beginning of 2014 and cannot say exactly how it has changed in last years, in connection with the ongoing policy of accepting refugees).

Things to do

Tourists come here primarily because of the museums of world brands of cars, but if you have a lot of free time, you can find some entertainment. Although, to be honest, it's not very simple: Stuttgart is an ordinary German city with a standard set of entertainment.

Shopping and shops

If you have already walked around the city and seen enough sights, go to Markthalle- indoor food market with a century of history, located in the center of Stuttgart (next to Marktplatz and Markzstrasse).

I advise you to visit it not only for those who stay in apartments and have their own kitchen, but also for all lovers of sweets, as well as for those who have been traveling around Germany for a long time and are already tired of German cuisine. Here you can find a wide variety of delicacies (from pasta to baklava), as well as fresh fruits and vegetables of excellent quality.

Prices are slightly higher than in regular supermarkets, but it's worth it. From Monday to Friday, the market is open from 7:30 to 18:00, on Saturday from 7:00 to 17:00, Sunday is a day off (regardless of the season).

Bars. Where to go

Bars are very popular in Germany, much more so than nightclubs. Finding them is not difficult: there are a lot of them in the city center and on the outskirts.

In my opinion, the most interesting and noteworthy bar Sky Beach Stuttgart. This is a small beach with sun loungers in the heart of the city near the main station. In the evening, you can enjoy beautiful skies and great drinks here.

The place is open during the summer season from 12:00. The average cost of drinks will be 15 EUR.

Clubs and nightlife

Residents prefer bars to nightclubs in Stuttgart. However, lovers of clubbing can be recommended Club Grace on the outskirts of the city (U-bahn Salzäcker), near the SI-Erlebnis-Centrum Stuttgart (an entertainment center where you can also have a great evening with family or friends). By the way, there are very good hotels.

However, all the youth of Stuttgart gathers, as a rule, in the city center, more precisely on Theodor-Heuss-Straße: in a place with the highest concentration of bars and clubs working around the clock.

Souvenirs. What to bring as a gift

How to move around the city

It is most convenient to move around the city by metro (U-Bahn or S-Bahn), the fare system and fares are the same as throughout Germany.

A taxi ride will cost you about 10 EUR to any part of the city. Read more about taxis in Germany.

The best way to get around the Old Town is on foot or by bike. And if you are going to see a lot in a day, buy a one-day ticket (Tagesticket) and travel by bus. There are a lot of them on excursion routes.

Transport rental

Renting a car will cost you 20–25 EUR/day in the season and about 15 EUR/day in the winter. Rental prices at the airport and in the city itself are about the same, but still a little more expensive at the airport.

To rent a car, you only need driver's license(Although it is good to have your passport with you just in case. In some places you need it to conclude a contract). An international driver's license is not required to be issued separately: standard Russian documents are valid in Germany.

But if you are under 20 years old, be prepared for the fact that the price may become higher. Young people are considered to be at risk. But I have never heard of a rent being denied.

If you are coming for a long time, I advise you to ask the hotel for a good rental office. You can familiarize yourself with offers from international rental companies.

As a rule, in the city you can rent bicycles, scooters, motorcycles. I have never rented a car in Stuttgart, but I am sure that the process is no different from other cities. By the way, sometimes bicycles are rented at hotels.

  1. At the museums "Mercedes" and "Porsche" paid parking(1 EUR - first hour, 2 EUR - subsequent hours).
  2. During the day, there are traffic jams in the city, but they are not comparable to those in Moscow (rather of the St. Petersburg format).
  3. In the Old Town, of course, you will have to do without a car.
  4. The cost of gasoline is the same as throughout Germany: today it is about 1.4 EUR per liter.

Stuttgart - holidays with children

Whether to take children with you depends on whether you are going to go on holidays or just walk around the city. Automobile museums will be very interesting for both boys and girls: you can touch everything, climb everywhere. For the sake of these two places, it is worth going to Stuttgart with children, otherwise, it is just a German city with a typical interactive activity aimed at different audiences: for children - the Pig Museum, for adults - winemaking.

If you are going to go on holidays, I do not recommend taking children with you. Of course, there is Frulingfest fun and a lot of rides, but also a lot of all kinds of music, beer and students having fun.

For a purposeful visit with children, I would choose where you can go to Fantasyland.

The city was founded by the Swabian Duke Liudolf (son of Emperor Otto I), who in 947 organized a stud farm in these places (Old German Stuotgarten) from which the name of the city originated. This is reminiscent of the local coat of arms depicting a prancing horse on a golden field.

In 1321 Stuttgart became the seat of a count, in 1496 a duke, in 1806 a king of Württemberg. Grand Duchess Olga Nikolaevna (1822-1892) , the second daughter of the Russian Emperor Nicholas I, in 1846 married the Crown Prince of Württemberg, later King Charles I (1823-1891) . During World War II, the city was almost completely destroyed.

Stuttgart now

Stuttgart is the center of the largest industrial area in the southwest of Germany. Famous cars "Mercedes" are produced here.

Schiller Square (Schillerplatz) in the center is one of the most interesting places cities.

old palace (Altes Schloss, 12th century) was built as a castle surrounded by a moat and rebuilt in 1553-1578. architect A. Trech in the style of the German Renaissance. Of particular interest is the courtyard formed by galleries with arcades. The palace houses the Württemberg Museum (Wurttembergisches Landesmuseum, Romanesque, 12th century, rebuilt in late Gothic style in 1433; Tue-Sun 10.00-17.00). Romano-Gothic monastery church (Stiftskirche, 12th century) with two towers - the oldest in Stuttgart. In addition, there is an old barn on the square. North of the historic core, on the other side of Plani Street (planie), stands the New Palace (Neues Schloss, architects L. Retty, F. Guepier, baroque, 1746-1807), built at the behest of Duke Karl Alexander by his son Karl Eugen according to the French model. When recovering (1959-1964) Palace after the destruction of World War II, the facade was reproduced in its original form, but the interior was changed. The new palace is used as an administrative building. The Jubilee Column rises in front of the palace on Palace Square (Jubilaumssaule, 1841), established in honor of the 25th anniversary of the reign of King William I.

From the New Palace begins a series palace parks (Schlossgarten), which stretched in a narrow strip for 3 km. The Upper Palace Park also adjoins the palace. (Oberer Schlossgarten). On its eastern edge stands the modern building of the Landtag - the land parliament.

Close to State Theater Stuttgart (Staatstheater Stuttgart): State Opera (Staatsoper) occupying the "big house" (Grosses House), and the State Drama Theater (Staats-schauspiel) located in the "small house" (Kleines Haus, 1960-1962). The world-famous Stuttgart Ballet gives performances at the State Theatre.

Near railway station (Hauptbahnhof, 1914-1927) Middle Palace Park is located (Mittlerer Schlossgarten) where to visit the Carl Zeiss Planetarium (Carl-Zeiss-Planetarium; Tue-Fri 9.00-11.30, 14.00-16.30, additionally Wed, Fri 19.00-21.30, Sat, its 13.00-19.30), one of the most modern in Europe.

The longest of the parks is the Lower Palace Park (Unterer Schlossgarten)- overlooks the Neckar River and touches the Rosensteinpark (Rosensteinpark)- An English-style park. On the site of the Stuttgart suburb of Bad Cannstatt (Bad Cannstatt, east of the centre) there was a prehistoric settlement, and later - an ancient Roman fortification. Bad Cannstatt gained fame as a resort. Kursaal (Kursaal, classicism, 1825-1827) designed by the architect Toure. Bad Cannstatt became famous thanks to the traditional folk “agricultural festival”, which was first organized in 1818 at the direction of the Württemberg king Wilhelm I. Festive events are held every autumn on the Cannstatter Wasen site stretched along the Neckar (Cannstatter Wasen).

Of the relatively new buildings, it is worth noting the concert Song Hall (Konzerthaus Liederhalle) and TV tower (Fernsehturm, 217 m, 1954-1956), on it, at an altitude of 150 m, a restaurant is arranged.

At the exhibition grounds on Mount Killesberg (Killesberg, 3 km north of the city center) Trade fairs and congresses are held.

The museum contains about 1500 exhibits, of which 160 are Mercedes cars. different years. Visitors are provided with audio guides in Russian.

Useful information for tourists about Stuttgart in Germany - geographical position, tourist infrastructure, map, architectural features and attractions.

Stuttgart is the capital of Baden-Württemberg, located in southern Germany, on the banks of the Neckar River. Around 950, Duke Lutolf founded a stud farm on this site. This is still reminiscent of the coat of arms of the city: a black horse on a yellow background. But the name of Stuttgart with German language translates as "mare's garden". Over time, the city became the capital of the kingdom of Württemberg and was such until the second half of XIX century.

Today Stuttgart is one of the automotive capitals of Germany - two iconic car brands are produced here - Mercedes (in Sindelfingen) and Porsche (in Zuffenhausen). There are also two universities here. Stuttgart is known for its renowned ballet company, chamber orchestra and remarkable art collections.

On the central square of Stuttgart there is a huge palace complex - the New Castle, built in 1746-1807. Opposite it is the Royal building, erected half a century later. And next to it is the Municipal Art Gallery, which contains works of art of the 19th-20th centuries, including works by South German artists.

To the north of the New Castle are magnificent gardens laid out in early XIX century. The Carl Zeiss Planetarium and the Württemberg State Theater are also located here.

The harmonious 16th-century building of the Old Palace has been beautifully restored, its courtyard is used for various cultural events, and the building itself houses a collection of the local history museum of Baden-Württemberg: paintings, jewelry, astronomical instruments, costumes. Here, not far from both palaces, is the National Gallery of Baden-Württemberg, which presents European painting from the 15th to the 20th century, as well as a collection of engravings.

Of the museums that should not be missed, we must mention the Automobile Museum at the Mercedes-Benz plant, which displays exhibits from 1886 to the present day.

Stuttgart is a city where music always sounds. The International Bach Academy, Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonic, Chamber Orchestra and Chamber Choir, various music festivals are an integral part of Stuttgart's city image. Musicals, which have been playing in Stuttgart for 20 years, should also be included in this area.

Due to the hilly terrain and mild valley climate in Stuttgart and especially its environs, there are magnificent vineyards, and not only light, but also dark grapes ripen here, which is rare for Germany. The pride of Stuttgart is the famous "Trollinger", the best Württemberg red wine.

Swabian cuisine is very tasty. This is a lot of dough, for example, a kind of Swabian pasta - “spätzle” with cheese and onions, or “maultaschen” - something like dumplings, but larger, juicier and with different fillings. Or roast game. It's all fresh and made according to "grandmother's recipes".

Stuttgart — Stuttgart

In this article you will learn:

An amazingly beautiful city in Germany - Stuttgart, which is the capital and concurrently the birthplace of the famous automobile brands "Porsche" and "Mersedes", in addition, it can also be called an important cultural and industrial center of Germany.

The city boasts an incredible abundance of greenery, whether it be parks, luxurious gardens, own vineyards, which make it possible to enjoy fine wines.

In this article, you will learn the history of the city and read about its sights.

A Brief History of Stuttgart

Symbol of Stuttgart

In ancient times, on the site of the city there was a Roman fortress "Stutengarten".

The foundation of the castle dates back to 950, when Duke Liudolf, the son of the Emperor of Rome - Otto I the Great, decided to build a stud farm and fortifications next to the fortress - this is how the settlement began to be called "Stuttgart" (translated from German - "mare's garden").

The history of origin left its mark on the coat of arms, as well as on the symbol of the Porsche car, on it you can see the image of a horse on a golden background.

Climate

Due to the territorial location, the climate that sets the tone for the weather is continental. From bad weather to summer time city defend mountain ranges such as the Swabian Alb and the Black Forest. Summer thunderstorms are rare, but they do not bypass Stuttgart. In winter, snow covers the ground, but only for a few days. In the central part of Stuttgart, which the locals call "Kessel", the climate is milder and warmer than in the suburbs, and there is much less rainfall.

The winter months are December, January (the coldest month of the year), February and March, precipitation falls mainly in the form of rain.

If you know how the name of this German is translated from Goethe's language locality, then absolutely no one has a question why the coat of arms has just such an outline. And the name comes from the German Stutengarten, which means "stable garden", so a strong, beautiful stallion is located on the main symbol of the city.

Dive into history

Today, Stuttgart is an important industrial centre, in terms of the number of inhabitants, it is in sixth place in the country. In addition, the city has the status of a capital, since representatives of the official authorities of the land sit here.

Meanwhile, the date of foundation of Stuttgart is 950; the birth of a new settlement is associated with the name of the Swabian Duke Liudolf. Throughout history, this German city has played an important role, changing leading roles. Either it is the main city of the county, or the elector, and since 1806 it has become the capital of the kingdom of Württemberg.

With the appearance on these lands of the brainchild of Karl Benz, the first car factories, Stuttgart becomes the capital and "cradle" of the German automotive industry. The plants would subsequently develop into a huge corporation with the world-famous name Mercedes-Benz.

The brainchild of another car enthusiast Ferdinand Porsche will appear in 1931 also in Stuttgart. Porsche, one of the most expensive and beautiful cars, will have fans all over the world. The logo of the iron horse company will be a modified coat of arms of the city.

Beautiful and proud animal

Any color photo of the coat of arms of Stuttgart will emphasize the style and conciseness of the main heraldic sign. This is noticeable, firstly, by the color scheme of the coat of arms, where there are only two colors: yellow (gold), used for the background of the shield; black, representing the suit of the knight.

The shield has a rounded bottom shape and the only image is a powerful, strong horse, turned to the right and reared up. The fluttering mane and the same fluttering tail of the animal symbolize movement, the desire to move forward, to develop.

In heraldry, the term “horse” is used, the image of an unsaddled, rearing, as on the coat of arms of Stuttgart, is called a “wild horse”. This is one of the most ancient heraldic symbols. Given the year the city was founded, its most important role in the life of the German territories, the choice of such a main symbol of the city is quite justified.
