In the post-war years, thanks to the latest achievements of technicians, it was possible to significantly increase the volume of extraction of "black gold". Today Russia has regained its lost leading positions in this area, and Western Siberia is the main oil-producing region.

Industrial production of gas and oil has long become one of the priority areas in the development of entire industries and technologies, among which there is not only the fuel and energy complex, but also the agro-industrial, automobile and aircraft construction, medicine, etc.
Considering the significant contribution of workers and labor collectives of the oil and gas industry, the hard work of geologists and drillers, builders and developers, technologists and transport workers, as well as everyone who linked their labor activity with the production, processing and supply of oil and gas back in Soviet times, according to Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Council Soviet Union 1980 of October 1, No. 3018-X "On Holidays and Memorable Days", a professional holiday was established - the Day of Oil and Gas Industry Workers, which began to be celebrated on the first Sunday in September. According to the project, this professional holiday was confirmed later, during the years of "perestroika", and was included in the calendar of holidays and memorable dates as amended by Decree No. 9724-XI of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR "On amendments into the legislation of the USSR on holidays and memorable days.
