Where better to go to Sri Lanka. Holidays in sri lanka

When the cold season comes, many inhabitants of northern latitudes begin to dream of the tropics. "Where to go, what to choose - Goa or Sri Lanka? Where is the best place to rest?" - such thoughts sweep through the minds of those whose vacation fell during the winter months. But the Indian state does not compare with the island state in terms of the style of recreation. In Sri Lanka, foam discos and trance music on the beach are not in honor. Entertainment there is very decent and always within the law: fishing, picnics, barbecues, relaxing beach holidays. Life itself in Ceylon flows slowly and as if in languid bliss. Unfortunately, this also applies to service personnel in hotels and restaurants. It is not accepted to rush here. The exception is chain hotels with European management. And this circumstance must be taken into account first of all when choosing a hotel in Sri Lanka. As for the resort, everything is not so simple here. Our article is devoted to this problem. Indeed, in addition to the "specialization" of the resort, the climate plays an important role. The legendary island of Ceylon, now independent state Sri Lanka, small in size. But in different time in regions, the weather can vary significantly.

Climate of the island

The proximity to the equator reliably ties summer to these places. It can be cold only in the mountains, where the temperature in winter and at night can drop to + 10 degrees. In other regions, the thermometer stubbornly stays at around + 28-30 ° C all year round. The problem for tourists is not the temperature of the air or water (the sea, by the way, is always very warm here), but the precipitation. Sri Lanka's climate is governed by monsoons. From May to the end of September, a strong southwest wind brings from equatorial zone torrential rains. Ninety-five percent of the annual rainfall occurs during this season. However, there are also some nuances here. For those who, for financial reasons, want to visit the island country during the rainy season, we can suggest where it is best to relax in Sri Lanka. Choose the north or east coast. There showers occur mainly at night, and the sun shines during the day. These are such resorts as Jaffna, Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Anuradhapura.

Transition period

In terms of area, the island of Ceylon can be compared to a standard area Russian Federation... However, in terms of climate, Sri Lanka shows itself to be a full-fledged country with various regions. The rainy season leaves the island gradually. Prices in mid-autumn are still very low, and the amount of precipitation in some regions is sharply decreasing. So, Sri Lanka in October: where is the best place to relax? The question is better rephrased. Where in the middle of autumn you should definitely not go? These are the resorts of the south and west. Starting from Negombo and towards the equator, the whole coast is flooded with rain. "Wet period" seems to want to have a last chat so that they will remember. And on the northern and eastern coasts it is more or less dry. Showers take place only sporadically and at night. But at the beginning of the "wet season", in April, it is better to avoid the resorts of Negombo, Colombo and Anuradhapura. The rains come there first.

November

Both in Sri Lanka and in the northern latitudes, the weather in this sad month is mostly cloudy. But it's one thing when heavy clouds have covered the sky and it is snowing and raining, and another thing is when the yard is + 30 ° C, and the sun that has peeped out instantly drains the snow-white sand of the beaches. And for those who decide where it is better to relax in November in Sri Lanka, we advise you to choose resorts such as Dikwella, Mirissa, Koggala and Tangalle. Negombo and Trincomalee should be strongly avoided - there “ wet season»Is delayed the longest. But these are zenital rains. They pass when the sun reaches its highest point in the firmament. Such showers are violent, but very short-lived. Throughout the rest of Sri Lanka, the tourist season opens. Especially good on the southwestern tip of the island. It is dry there, the air humidity is decreasing, which makes the rest of the European very comfortable. Sea water temperature + 26 ° C. But the main thing is that the water area calms down, the storms stop.

Sri Lanka: where is the best place to relax in winter?

Since Ceylon lies in the Northern Hemisphere, the coldest period is December, January and February. And the first month of winter is the most "severe" here. But what does this mean in Ceylon? High in the mountains, the thermometer can really drop at night to + 10 degrees, and during the day it will rise only to + 16 ° C. But real summer reigns on the coast. The temperature in the shade during the day is + 28-30 ° С, and at night it does not drop below + 24 ° С. The ocean warms up to 28 degrees. This is Sri Lanka in December. Where is the best place to rest at the beginning of the month? To be guaranteed to protect yourself from the rains, it is better to choose resorts on the southwest coast. In the east of the island, rain is still possible, but they are short-term and mostly at night. In the second half of December, it becomes dry throughout Sri Lanka. But in order not to give the rains the slightest chance to fall on your head, you should choose resorts in the west of the country, in the area of the capital Colombo, or in the south, in the vicinity of Galle. Those tourists who vacation in Ceylon in December have a unique opportunity to observe the migration of sperm whales and whales off the coast of the island.

Peak season

The influx of tourists culminates in the period from Christmas (December 25) to the Day of the Adoration of the Magi (January 6). This New Year's Eve, prices skyrocket like fireworks rockets. But even after the sixth, they decrease only slightly. The first month of the year is not the time for budget tourists. Where is the best place to relax in January in Sri Lanka? North island nation still dominated by the wet monsoon. Therefore, Trincomalee and its surroundings are best off the list of resorts to visit at this time. But the rest of the island is just a tropical paradise. According to tourists, January in Sri Lanka is the most comfortable month for Europeans. It is not too hot during the day - + 28-30 ° С in the shade, and the completely calmed ocean warms up to + 29 degrees. It is hottest in Colombo, Galle, Hikkaduwa and Bentota. There the thermometer fluctuates between +30 and + 33 ° C. Diving is good in the first month of the year. The water is very clear, corals bloom.

February

In the second month of the year, the high tourist season continues. Calm sea and comfortable weather for Europeans reign over the entire territory of the island. The hottest is in the southwest. Therefore, those who want to anneal the bones in the sand of the beaches can choose resorts in the Colombo or Beruwela area for recreation. There, daytime temperatures are stable + 30-32 degrees. What about excursions to Sri Lanka? Where is the best place to relax in February? Buddhist holidays are held this month. They are celebrated especially colorfully in the capital of the country, Colombo. To watch the procession of elephants and other ceremonies, it is better to choose the resorts of Negombo or Beruwela.

Sri Lanka: where is the best place to relax in the spring?

In March, dry weather reigns throughout the island. But for those who do not tolerate the heat, it can cause a lot of trouble. The thermometer does not drop below + 30 degrees during the day. And even the nights bring little relief (+ 25 ° C). Nevertheless, the tourist season is in full swing. After all, the sea water temperature is about + 29 degrees! At the end of March, the wet monsoon sometimes makes itself felt in the southwest, in the resorts of Wadduwa, Negombo, Bentota and others. April in Sri Lanka is the hottest month of the year. During the day, the air temperature is not less than +33 degrees, and at night + 27 ° C. But in the south, the amount of precipitation is increasing. Therefore, in the middle of spring, the resorts of the northern coast should be preferred. May is the first month of the rainy season. They are on the rampage in the southwest of the island. The water becomes cloudy due to storms and downpours. But the mountains in the central part of the island provide reliable protection of the northern territories from the wet monsoon. In May, you should choose the resort of Nuwara Eliya for your vacation.

Excursion tourism

Now let's consider the specifics of the resorts of Sri Lanka. Where is the best place for tourists who want to see the "real Ceylon", and not just beaches and hotels? First of all, we should recommend the big cities - Colombo and Galle. They are located in the west and south of the island, so the best time to visit them will be the winter months and March. The historical and cultural sights of the capital of the state can be viewed in three days. Columbo attracts primarily shopaholics. There is no city in Sri Lanka equal to Galle in terms of the abundance of attractions. His historical Center and the old fort are included in the UNESCO list. Ceylon supplies the world with tea. It would be unforgivable folly not to visit the plantation of bushes that give a fragrant drink. However, it should be remembered that in the mountains where the famous Ceylon tea grows, the temperature does not rise above + 16 degrees during the winter months, so you should bring warm clothes. For those visiting Sri Lanka during the "wet season", the grand celebration of the Buddha's birthday (May) and the Full Moon Festival (June) will be consolation.

Beach vacation

Those who aim to use the tropics for tanning and swimming, in isolation from the cultural characteristics of Ceylon, should focus on the climatic indications, which we wrote about above. But there are also some nuances that should be taken into account when deciding where it is better to relax in Sri Lanka. For example, in October, the waters off the coast of Trincomalee are attacked by poisonous jellyfish. Besides, there are a lot of mosquitoes. In the midst of the rainy season, in July, on east coast Arugam Bay hosts the Arugam Bay Surf Classic, attracting surfers from all over the world. The most memorable event in July is Esala Perahera. This festival with Buddhist rituals lasts ten days. In Hikkaduwa, also in summer, there is an annual beach festival for the construction of castles and sand sculptures. Hikkaduwa Beach Fest is accompanied by music and dancing.

Sri Lanka is truly an island unique in every way. This is not just a country of absolute exoticism, the birthplace of tea, elephants and coconut trees. This is something more: here you can find the last islet of the relic forest; not far from Kandy to see dense, unspoiled Veddas; here you can see ancient cities, ruins of palaces lost in the jungle and Buddhist sanctuaries; here you can also find forests overgrown with dense vines and ... rivers teeming with crocodiles. Enough for all of this to become the purpose of a separate journey, right? Well, the beaches of this island stretch endlessly, and it will take at least a month to visit them all ... So when and where will it be best?

In Sri Lanka all year round humid hot or at least warm climate, although not everywhere the same - the climate of the island is strongly influenced by the relief and the length of the island from north to south. The average annual temperature in the plains is about +29 - 31 degrees (seasonal fluctuations are very insignificant), in the mountainous part of the country the temperature is kept at around +16 - 24 degrees. The water temperature in the Indian Ocean all year round is about +25 - 27 ° C.

The rainy season falls on the period from May to September(southwest monsoon) for west and south coasts and with October to April(northeast monsoon) for east coast.

Hence and the best time for beach holiday in the country: October - April for the south and west coasts and May - September for the east coast... Based on the experience of its own travels, the Bambu Club company notes that this division is very arbitrary: at any time of the year, on any coast of the island, there are always enough sunny days a year for a comfortable pastime on the beach.

Galle - a mixture of history and exoticism

Galle is a peculiar town in the south of Sri Lanka. On the one hand, it bears a historical imprint, since several centuries ago a fortress, the Galle sea fort, was built in it. The structure has survived to this day. Its lighthouse, fortifications, fortifications rise on the shores of the Indian Ocean. Inside the fort, where barracks and military structures were located many years ago, a small stone town has been preserved. Its streets have remained primordially narrow, two cars in them are unlikely to miss each other. This place is now exclusively tourist in nature, in the town there are a lot of restaurants, shops, souvenir shops, there are even a couple of stylized hotels. Who rests in them, I wondered, walking around the fort. That is why I saw a bus taking a group of foreigners to this hotel. Surely, they ordered some kind of sightseeing tour and stayed at a hotel in the Galle Sea Fort for the night. Other options are difficult to come up with, because swimming and sunbathing in this place in Sri Lanka will not work, there is no normal descent into the water or a beach.

Immediately from the airport I took a bus to Colombo. The cost is 300 Lankan rupees (approx. 110 rubles. The bus is comfortable, like our fixed-route taxis).

In Colombo I took a bus to Galle - cost 400 rupees. In Halle, I booked a hostel on the booking. Went with a friend, so the cost of the room was divided between two. The price for the room was $ 4 per day. Hostel - Red Rock Place.

We went back by train. One ticket costs 260 rupees (about 100 rubles) from Galle to Colombo. They rented a hostel in Colombo - it cost $ 10 a day.

Upon arrival in Vatsap and on Instagram, offers for excursions from Russian-speaking guides begin to come. We traveled everywhere on our own, but I can say the cost of excursions: from Galle to go to see the nine-arch bridge, a waterfall and, it seems, turtles - about $ 80 per person. Despite the fact that it was off-season.

We drove on our own.

From Galle - bus to Matara - 100 rupees

From Matara to Nuwara Eliya they took a tuk-tuk, because there was no train (off-season) - 6500 rupees (1500 rubles). On the way, we stopped at another waterfall - Diyaluma. It turned out a detour of 10 km along the serpentine - the driver was paid extra 1000 rupees.

In Ella itself, it is free to go to the nine-arch bridge.

Go to the local waterfall - 400 rupees round trip (cost of a tuk-tuk for two).

Food and groceries

I indicate the cost in local rupees. The exchange rate at that time was about 300 rupees - 100 rubles

Took a very tasty coffee and smoothie bowl (the place is directly opposite the surf spot) - 400 rupees of coffee and 600 rupees of a bowl. Insanely delicious.

Vegetable salad with shrimps - 550 rupees

In general, the cost of food in a cafe is about the same throughout Shli Lanka. More expensive, probably, in Colombo itself in some expensive restaurants and in Fort Galle.

In Fort Galle, they had breakfast - a tuna sandwich - 600 rupees, a dessert like cheesecake - 500 rupees, cappuccino - 600 rupees. Everything is very delicious.

I took seafood cream soup - 600 rupees.

Bought two lobsters for Rs 1000. The hostel owner made them for Rs 200.

Ice cream in stores - 50 rupees per cone.

Souvenirs and other goods

They wanted to change dollars at the airport, but the rate turned out to be just extortionate. Check the rate on the Internet and only then exchange dollars for local rupees.

The cost for souvenirs differs depending on the place, as elsewhere. In Forte Galle itself, the cost of a postcard / magnet is 150 rupees. If you drive further to the nearest "village", then for 150 rupees you can buy a pack of postcards.

I advise you to buy a local SIM card. The cost is 300 Sri Lankan rupees and 100 deposited into the account. (300 Lankan rupees - 115 rubles).

Cost of services and entertainment

We went surfing, we surfed.

Bicycle rental - 500 rupees / day.

Hour surf lesson (instructor + board) - 1000 rupees / hour (cheap, maybe low season)

In large cities, the beaches are poorly equipped, there is no need to talk about comfort. The most beautiful beach recognized Negombo. Firstly, it is located near the airport, has a wide coastline and all the amenities for recreation. There are hotels and hotels nearby.

What can you buy?

You can buy cheap things in Sri Lanka. Initially, you cannot say that the population of the country can be called dandies and fashionistas. Because most of the inhabitants are Hindus, and they wear traditional clothes. Tourists can only buy the sari as a souvenir, but they will not wear it. Maximum once. But spontaneous markets sell other goods: tracksuits, sweaters, shorts, jeans. Shopping has one more feature. In Sri Lanka, they sell branded things for a penny. Lots of fakes. I will tell you an easy way to distinguish a quality product on the shelves of Sri Lanka from a low-quality one. A low-quality one will be cheap, just do not rush to buy. Uneven seams, poor quality fabric - all these signs should stop you. A branded thing for a penny will be sold only if there is a marriage. For example, buttons are not sewn correctly or the collar is dirty. Indeed, they sell branded items on the shelves, but it is difficult to find them. I decided to buy Ceylon tea. I definitely won't be wrong with this purchase. First I got to the tasting. The expert tasted 50 types of tea, just imagine, the taster manages to taste all the varieties presented in 10 minutes. Of course, I tasted for a long time. With difficulty I chose one variety. Remember: if you want to buy delicious tea, it must be pure black without additives.

Entertainment

As entertainment, a tourist can choose to visit temples. There is one interesting rite in Sri Lanka. I passed it. Locals offer to perform the ritual right next to the temple. You need to buy a coconut and make a wish. If the coconut breaks and milk spills out, then the wish will come true. In Sri Lanka, you can arrange entertainment for yourself for free: watch the fishermen work early in the morning.

"Shining Island", "Pearl of Asia", "Tear of India" - these are just a few of the many definitions that characterize the enchanting beauty of Sri Lanka. For its guests, a tropical paradise has prepared an exciting variety of exotic landscapes, the ruins of ancient mysterious cities, the meditative silence of Buddhist temples and the hospitality of local residents. But the main attraction of the island is the best beaches in Sri Lanka, washed by the warm waves of the Indian Ocean, offering an idyllic relaxation on the gentle sand among the giant coconut palms bowed to the water.

A nice bonus only for our readers is a discount coupon when paying for tours on the site before October 31:

  • AFTA2000Guru - a promo code for 2,000 rubles. for tours to Thailand from 100,000 rubles.

Mirissa

The length of this beach is relatively short - only one kilometer, but it is considered one of the most beautiful in the area. The local infrastructure is not very developed, which makes this place even more atmospheric and secluded. Bad for swimming. Despite the fact that it is located in the bay, it does not protect it from gusty winds and stormy waves. Basically, it is locally chosen by surfers and fans of long walks.

To the east there are a number of quieter coves - here you can already fully enjoy swimming - calm waters are framed clean beaches... It is noteworthy that the border between the zones is a narrow sand spit, which forms an island. Those who know about this miracle of Mirissa come here at sunset to see the most beautiful landscapes that can only be found here.

Unawatuna

It is considered one of the best in the world. Once it was wild, but even the first locals appreciated the beauty of the local landscapes and rather quickly "trodden" the path here. This was completely justified: the gold of the sand, the tropics, which come very close, palm trees grow almost along the ocean. It is impossible not to fall in love with this splendor! On the left side of the lagoon, the reef comes very close, which is especially pleasing to divers - it is not necessary to sail a decent distance from the coast to enjoy the panoramas of colorful underwater life.

It is noteworthy that despite the appearance of some cafes and guest houses, the beach is still not entirely absorbed by the modern paraphernalia of a beach holiday. The romance of the "wild" beach remains - it is worth taking the opportunity and trying to have time to visit here before civilization sets foot on the local gently sloping shores.

Hikkaduwa

Hikkaduwa is famous for its picturesque lake of the same name, historical monuments and beaches. Among them, Hikkaduwa Beach and Narigama stand out. The first is a rather narrow strip sandy beach, tightly nestled against the shore by dozens of cafes, restaurants and bars, which are located along the coast. At the same time, the bottom of the beach consists of rock, and therefore the local waters are very clean, juicy turquoise and are guaranteed to attract fans of photography. Those who go to this resort for the sake of swimming should turn their attention to Narigama. This beach has occupied the territory of a cozy enclosed bay and has a gentle slope, which makes it undoubtedly more attractive for swimming.

Tangalle

Tangalle is located in the very south of the country. Its rock-shaped coastline stretches for 9 km and forms many lagoons, along which you can take a short trip by boat or kayak. As for the ocean, here it shows all its power, washing up mountains of golden sand on the coast. Strong waves, steep descent and fast current do not promote a serene swim.

People come here to soak up the rays of the gentle sun and relax in silence from the chaos of the city. You can walk along the coast for hours without meeting a single living soul. In the evenings, your only companions will be sea turtles going out onto the sand to lay eggs. A huge plus of Tangalle is its proximity to the Yala National Park, spread over an area of 1,300 km2. In this tropical jungle, you can take part in a jeep safari and see leopards in their natural habitat.

Negombo

Just 20 minutes from the airport in Colombo is Negombo - the oldest beach in the former Ceylon. Back in the 60s of the XX century, the first tourists exploring the island sunbathed here under the lush growing palm trees in the immediate vicinity of the ocean surf. Much has changed since then, but the lush tropical vegetation and soft sand interspersed with small seashells have remained the same.

Whole families come here. While parents, lying in sun loungers, contemplate the ocean expanses, children can safely play in a calm bay. Negombo offers its guests a wide range of entertainment options. Here you can spend time riding on gentle waves on a boat or jet ski, or, armed with a mask and fins, explore a sunken ship. But you should not go far from isolated areas of hotels - within the city, the coastal zone is poorly cleaned, the water here is muddy and often carries the waste of civilization onto land.

Wadduwa

Those who choose Wadduwa as their destination in Sri Lanka will be rewarded beautiful beach and a relaxed atmosphere. The 4 km long golden strip of coastline, covered with fine sand, is one of the most beautiful in the western part of the island. Moderate waves create good conditions for windsurfing, and at the same time are safe for those who want to swim in peace in the azure ocean.

Countless shady palms, clear water, sports grounds, restaurants and cafes serving seafood dishes are just an incomplete list of what Wadduwa has prepared for her guests. Ayurvedic centers are open for those interested in traditional healing procedures, and shopaholics will have a great time in jewelry stores, where you can find inexpensive original jewelry.

Weligama

The three-kilometer coastal strip, located 150 km south of Colombo, is almost never visited by strong monsoon winds. The incessant gentle waves scare away those who like to swim in calm water from the coast, but they are ideal for learning to surf and practicing simple maneuvers. For novice athletes, all conditions have been created here: the presence of surf schools (including those for Russian speakers), rental of equipment and boards.

Weligama is a young resort, its infrastructure is practically undeveloped. The locals know about shopping only by hearsay, so be sure to pack the necessary medicines and hygiene items in your suitcase. The choice of hotels is not very diverse either - on the coast you can find either luxurious expensive five-star complexes overlooking the ocean, or cheap guest houses located in the village.

Arugam Bey

In the southeast of the island, 320 km from the capital of Sri Lanka, Colombo, there is a multi-kilometer curved strip of the purest sand. This place harmoniously combines tranquility and rhythm of life. There are many fishing villages... Local boats leave for the ocean long before dawn. If you get up early, you can see how fishermen sort the nets on the bank and lay out a rich catch on the wet sand. Tourist accommodation is moderately priced and includes guest houses and budget hotels.

Arugam Bay is a favorite spot for surfers. The height of not too steep and long waves running across the coast reaches 1.5–2 m, which is perfect for fans of extreme boarding. Novice athletes can undergo training (an hour - 2,000-3,000 rupees) and rent equipment (a day - 800-1,000 rupees).

Uppuveli

If you are traveling to Sri Lanka in anticipation of a measured holiday far from civilization, then the village of Uppuveli, located in the northeast of the island, 6 km from the city of Trincomalee, awaits you. There are no luxury hotels here, renowned centers Ayurveda and expensive restaurants - tourists come here for budget accommodation, local flavor, deserted coast and calm ocean, protected from the elements by a coral reef.

In addition to sunbathing and water activities, Upuvelli invites its guests to familiarize themselves with the sights. Places in the vicinity of Trincomalee are sacred to Sri Lankans professing Buddhism and Hinduism. Here are the ruins of the Temple of Velgam Vihara, built in the 1st century AD. BC, towering on a 120-meter cliff Temple of Koneshwaram, Fort Frederick of the 17th century and the sacred hot springs of Kanniyya, according to legend, were created by the god Vishnu.

Nilaveli

Snow-white Nilaveli - according to travel companies, is the cleanest in Sri Lanka. Its coastline is perfect for those who appreciate the calm waves, giving vacationers the opportunity to swim safely. Those who prefer coolness to the hot rays of the sun will also love it - palm trees here almost come close to the water, creating a thick shade.

Fans of diving do not leave Nilaveli without attention. 5 km from the coast is Pigeon Island, surrounded by a coral reef. Diving to a depth of 8–20 m, lovers of the underwater world watch with interest the life of the inhabitants of the kingdom of Neptune: exotic fish, Malgash sharks, stingrays, barracudas and sea turtles. Octopuses, cuttlefish and dolphins are found here.

Beruwela

The town of Beruwela, located 79 km from the airport in Colombo, combines the features of fishing villages, attracting tranquility, positiveness and national flavor, and a modern lively resort, known for a variety of hotels: from simple pensions to large hotel complexes working on the "all inclusive" system. But the main advantage of Beruwela is its beaches. The coastal strip up to 100 m wide, bordered by palm trees and washed by sapphire-colored waves, is rightfully considered one of the most beautiful in the country.

Families with children appreciate the gentle slope into the water, which provides ideal conditions for swimming and play. The reef located parallel to the coast, which has been chosen by colorful fish and giant sea turtles, attracts fans of diving in Beruwela. The Bentota River, which flows into the ocean, gives a zest, giving you the opportunity to ride a boat among the mangroves and see crocodiles.

Induruwa

The sleepy village of Induruwa in western Sri Lanka is a 4 km long deserted coastline lined with palm and mangrove trees, several hotels aimed at middle and high-income guests. The wide beach with light soft sand is ideal for walking, but the ocean is not averse to showing its strength and unbridled character. Swimming lovers should opt for the nearby picturesque lagoon.

Don't expect much from the infrastructure of Induruwa. Several cafes, a market and small shops are all that the resort offers to travelers. If you want to diversify your vacation, then go explore the city's surroundings. There is a turtle farm nearby, where you can watch the young hatching from the eggs. Also, local travel agencies offer boat trips along the Madu Ganga River, the banks of which have chosen as their home monkeys, crocodiles, monitor lizards and exotic birds.

Ahungalla

Picturesque palm groves and a 2.7-kilometer paradise beach located in the southwest of the island create the peaceful atmosphere that metropolitan residents dream of. This place is ideal for swimming in the crystal clean water, diving and leisurely walks along the coast. On your way, you will meet crabs of all sizes, and if you are lucky, even the Caretta Caretta turtles hurrying to lay their leathery eggs in the golden sand.

If you choose Ahungalla, be sure to visit the Kande Viharaya Temple, located 20 km away, where the world's largest sitting Buddha statue is located. Those who wish to improve their health can take a course of procedures at the Ayurvedic Center, where the most ancient methods of healing the body and soul are practiced. Narigama

The city of Hikkaduwa stretches along the western coast of the island, 128 km from Colombo. Back in the 60s of the last century, a fishing village was located on this place; today, tourists are greeted by a resort famous for its wide coastal strip, colorful coral reefs and fun parties. The most popular beach in Hikkaduwa is Narigama Beach - a corner of the turquoise ocean, coarse sand, azure sky and green palm trees.

In January surfers come here to hone their skills, gliding on giant waves. In February, the element calms down a bit, and local hotels are filled with families with children. For the little ones there is expanse - a gentle coastline, warm water and a small calm lagoon. At this time, life begins to emerge on the snow-white sand - tiny turtles hatch from eggs and rush to the ocean.

Jungle beach

South of Colombo, 76 km from the airport, Unawatuna, a popular resort with developed infrastructure, pristine nature and a large selection of inexpensive hotels, has been a constant delight of tourists for many years. The ocean shore is represented by a quiet bay, fenced off from the raging waves by a double coral reef. Surf lovers will be bored here, but couples can safely come to Unawatuna without fear for the children.

Unawatuna has secret place located 1 km from the main beach. Hire a tuk-tuk taxi and it will take you to a true paradise surrounded by the jungle of Roomassala. The coastal strip with a length of 100 meters seems to have left the Bounty advertising brochures. The ocean surprises with its unusual green color and calm disposition. Waves are a rare guest at Jungle Beach. Despite the isolation, everything here is prepared for the convenience of tourists: sun loungers are placed under the palm trees, there is a shower, toilet and cafe on the territory.

Polhena

In the very center of Matara - largest city in the south of Sri Lanka - a chain of small beaches stretched along the coast, united by the name Polhena. All of them are protected from the raging elements by a 4-kilometer coral reef, so there are no waves here even during the monsoon season. This area is popular with both tourists and locals. Sri Lankans are afraid open ocean and prefer to swim in a calm bay resembling a huge lake.

A big plus of rest on Polhen is the proximity to civilization. In Matara you will find shops, restaurants for all tastes, cinemas, museums, nightclubs that rival European ones, and interesting sights: the Temple of Our Lady, the Dondra lighthouse, the Vecherahena Buddhist temple and the snake farm. In addition, the city is an important transport hub for the country - from here you can take a short trip to nearby Dikwella, Mirissa and Weligama.

Dikwella

The snow-white bounty-style coastal strip will open to the eyes of those who decided to spend their holidays in the picturesque village of Dikwella, located in the southern part of Sri Lanka. This place is created for leisurely walks and exploring the kingdom of the lush tropics and majestic waterfalls. Coastline stretches for 2 km and is reliably protected by rocks and a reef, making Dikwella the best swimming in the south of the country.

You should not look for entertainment or hectic nightlife here - those who are interested in a relaxing holiday come to the resort. The distance from the busy highway and a small number of hotels are also favorable to it. But if you are still bored basking in the warm rays of the sun, go on a date with the sights of Dikwella: the Temple of Vevurukannal Viharaya and the "Howling Hole" - a natural 25-meter fountain gushing from impregnable rocks.

Which one to choose for families with children

When choosing the right place to spend a vacation, parents are always faced with the question of the safety of the resort. To a large extent, this applies to Sri Lanka. The island is surrounded by the ocean, which means that the coastal zone is quiet places where your little one can dabble in the gentle surf without fear. For family vacation it is wiser to choose a few beaches, separated from the raging waves by reefs. Even during the summer months, when monsoons are raging on the south side, comfortable weather is set in the northeast, favorable for families with children.

During this period, one of best beaches for the younger generation, Nilaveli Bay becomes the most beautiful place on the northern coast, protected by a coral reef. In addition to swimming and sunbathing, you can watch dolphins and whales here. If you arrived in the country with a child, feel free to choose a cozy calm beach, located next to the Dickwella hotel, as your location. Resort SPA(Dikwella bay). Due to the small promontory, there are almost no waves here. Equally popular with families are western Wadduwa and southern Unawatuna, famous for high temperature coastal waters, slight tides and a gentle entrance to the calm ocean.

In order that the long-awaited vacation does not turn into constant concern for your children, before buying a tour, check out the advantages and disadvantages of relaxing in Sri Lanka with children.

  • A mild climate and a small difference in air temperatures. Stable warm ocean water, no poisonous jellyfish and dangerous sea creatures.
  • A variety of historical and natural attractions. In order to see the local representatives of the fauna (monitor lizards, monkeys, turtles, mongooses), it is not necessary to visit the zoo. Exotic animals are not afraid of people and often live near hotels.
  • There are many supermarkets, and therefore, opportunities to buy the usual food.
  • The main disadvantage of resting in Sri Lanka with children is the ocean. Most of the coastal area is not protected from strong currents and huge waves, unsuitable for inexperienced swimmers.
  • An exhausting flight. Direct flights from Russia to the former Ceylon are offered by Aeroflot. Travel time is about 9 hours. By using the services of other airlines, be prepared for connecting in India, United Arab Emirates or in the Maldives. In this case, the duration of the trip will increase by 3-10 hours.
  • Food. Local cuisine is quite spicy and unusual for Russian tourist and are not always suitable for feeding children. In addition, the sanitary and hygienic conditions are not the best here either.

Best time to travel

The whole territory of the island is dominated by a warm subequatorial (in the northeast) and equatorial (in the southwest) climate, hallmark which is high humidity (70–90%). The temperature is not subject to significant fluctuations and is from +25 to +33 ° C all year round. The ocean warms up to +30 ° C. Like most tropical islands, Sri Lanka is characterized by the presence of only two seasons, formed by steady winds - monsoons. They determine storms and downpours on the territory of the country. The largest amount of precipitation falls from the second half of May to September, when the time of the southwest monsoon comes to the west coast.

The sun often hides behind clouds, the wind speed is 5–8 m / s. In the northeastern part of the island, winds blowing from China bring bad weather from June to October. Taking into account climatic nuances, winter months are considered to be the optimal time for rest in Ceylon. During the day, the air temperature reaches +31 ° C. Ocean waters are not inferior, warming up to + 28 ° C. Rain at this time is a rare guest - only at night can there be short showers. Closer to April, the thermometer is inexorably creeping up. In May, the sky is clouded with heavy rainfall. In November, the weather again becomes comfortable and stable, giving a start to the start of the holiday season.

If I were a hotel tourist or a novice independent traveler who is planning a trip to Sri Lanka, then this question would worry me in the first place. So, you are going to Sri Lanka, but where to go? To Unawatuna or Hikkaduwa? Which resort to choose, where the sea is better, where there is more nightlife, which beach is cleaner. There are a lot of questions to which we will now try to give you answers.

Unawatuna

The beach in Unawatuna is small. You can get around it in 20 minutes. White and soft sand. The entrance to the water is sharp in places. The depth is about 5 meters from the coast. But the beach is good for swimming.

The peculiarity of the beach is unpleasant stones, which are carried out with each new wave. They are not always there, but in most cases. Apparently, some currents of the Indian Ocean are carrying these stones.

  • Healthy:

Waves. They are, but very small when compared with other beaches in Sri Lanka. Again, Unawatuna is perfect for swimming.

In the right corner of Unawatuna Beach, waves crash against rocks. Here you get good photos, as well as a splash of adrenaline and a flurry of emotions for those who, in principle, are afraid to swim, because if you come closer, you can see just giant 5-meter waves.

  • Read:

Swimming is almost always safe in Unawatuna. Huge waves crash on the reef. Especially calm water in quiet Havana, at the end of the beach.

  • Healthy:

Night life in Unawatuna boils. There are plenty of people on the beach. Young people gather every evening. Locals and tourists alike come to celebrate the passing day with a glass of beer in bars and beach restaurants. The beach has a bunch of motley bars and cafes working late. Music is playing, candles are burning on the tables (as in) and people are having fun.

  • Now read:

The beach infrastructure is developed by Sri Lankan standards. There are always free sun loungers for which you do not need to pay. You just need to order a can of beer or a dessert, and a deck chair will be provided to you for free.

Where can I book a transfer from the airport?

We use the service - KiwiTaxi
We ordered a taxi online, paid with a card. We were greeted at the airport with a sign with our name. Drove to the hotel in a comfortable car. We have already talked about their experience in this article

Unawatuna has no shortage of skinny elderly massage therapists who will gladly massage you, as well as vendors endlessly offering souvenirs and throwing painted rags in the wind.

  • It is interesting:

Fun on the beach. Do you want to go diving, go boating, order sightseeing tour or ride a water scooter with a breeze, then the beach in Unawatuna is what you need.

Cons of Unawatuna

The disadvantage of the beach in Unawatuna is the presence of a large crowd of drunk locals on weekends. They usually occupy the most trump place - a corner where there are no waves, but they often walk along the beach, look openly at the girls, swim near you.

The guys are trying to get to know each other, they can even touch a female tourist in the sea. So, if you are a girl and you see that several Sri Lankans have appeared around you in the water, who do not swim, but just sit in the water and look in your direction, then it is better to go swimming away from them as soon as possible or return to the sun lounger.

  • Healthy:

Sunsets. They are in Una, as the people say, who have lived there for a very long time. We haven't seen him in two months. Not on the beach, not from the window of our guest house. The sunset covers the mountain.

Sunset on the beach looks like this

Another sunset from the window

Conclusion on Unawatuna

The beach in Unawatuna is liked by almost everyone who has been to it. Despite the fact that the tsunami of 2004 was well battered, the beach has not lost its attractiveness for tourists. If you come for parties, partying and, at the same time, also lovers of bathing in relatively calm water, then this is the place for you.

Hikkaduwa

The beach at Hikkaduwa is wide and very long. You can walk for more than one hour. The entrance to the sea is smooth. Yellow sand. Hotels lined the entire length of the beach.

  • Healthy:

Waves in Hikkaduwa are either large or medium-sized for almost the entire length of the beach. Swimming in such waves is not recommended for an unprepared person. Still, there is one small harbor where you can safely swim.

  • Read:

Surfers have chosen Hikkaduwa because of these waves.
In the first days, I kept looking after Slava, but I saw only the top of his head.

In Hikkaduwa there is a corner where both locals and tourists swim, it is calm there. Those who cannot swim will not be scared there, but those who swim well can swim farther. This beach is right by Chaaya Tranz Hikkaduwa. The beach is marked on the map.

The nightlife in Hikkaduwa is not as vibrant as in Una. There are cafes and a couple of bars, but most of the time, life dies down early. And only the most courageous tourists or drunken local men remain on the streets.

  • Healthy:

We found Hikkaduwa more cute than Unawatuna

Beach infrastructure. There are no public sun loungers at Hikkaduwa Beach. And those sunbeds that are, belong to the hotels of the coastline.

A hotel with sun loungers, if you want and dare, you can go for free

The rest spread their towels on the shore and sunbathe on the sand, hiding in the shade of the trees.

The beach is wilder than Unawatuna

Fun on the beach. The main entertainment is feeding the turtles. Such a sight is only in Hikkaduwa. The locals have fed giant turtles and they come at the same time for food. You can watch turtles for free, or you can treat them yourself with a treat for a small fee.
