Beach "Gorki"

Catania, as you can see, is a seaside city, which in itself is a promising fact. But is there in Catania noteworthy beaches? This question must be of concern to many tourists planning independent rest in Sicily. If you are interested in the sea and beaches, then, you see, it would be convenient to fly to Catania and not go anywhere else.
In order not to beat around the bush, let's just say that this is real. In Catania there are beaches, and quite diverse. It is quite possible to settle here for at least a week, at least for two. The question is, how justified is this? In other words, are the beaches of Catania good enough to prefer them to all other options?
We will not undertake to give a definite answer. Much will depend on the purpose of your trip. If you are planning an extended vacation and expect to spend most of your time on the beach, then it probably doesn't make much sense to focus on Catania. In Sicily in general, and near Catania in particular, there are many much more interesting seaside resorts (see review articles "Beach resorts of Sicily" and "Beaches of Sicily. East coast"). At the same time, many interesting places reachable even by public transport, which, in fact, is not as bad as it is sometimes said. But if rest by the sea is not an end in itself for you, but only a pleasant addition to the program of visiting Catania, then local beaches should not be written off. Moreover, some options can be found in the immediate vicinity of the city center. With them, we will begin our review.
Beaches in the center of Catania
Before talking about the beaches in the center of Catania, it is worth noting that, whatever one may say, the historical center of the city is located at a distance from the beaches, and therefore combine beach holiday walking around the Old Town will be quite problematic. You will most likely need to use public transport or taxis. That is, you need to decide from the very beginning what is more important for you - the ability to walk 1) from the hotel (apartments, etc.) to the beach or 2) from the hotel to the main streets and squares of Catania.
In the first case, you can focus on hotels like Plaza Hotel Catania and Hotel Nettuno, which are located almost by the sea and provide their guests with access to small private beaches. Coastline in this part of Catania it is rugged and rocky. The beaches are mostly platform. You won't be able to soak up the soft sand here, but the sea is the cleanest and you don't have to go long in shallow water to swim to your heart's content.
Separately, it is worth mentioning the beach San Giovanni li Cuti(Spiaggia di San Giovanni Li Cuti) Here it is on the Google map. The beach is free, and, remarkably, not platform, but sandy and rocky.

The downside, as already noted, is that the main attractions of Catania are far from here. Nevertheless, if you wish to overcome this distance on foot, it is quite possible to walk for about half an hour.
In the second case (if you want to live closer to the historical center of Catania), you can look at a hotel or apartment somewhere halfway between the Old Town and the sea. Pay attention, in particular, to the Katana Residence apartment complex - in a fairly clean and cozy area, approximately at an equal distance from beaches and attractions. By the way, not far from here and to railway station Catania Centrale and the Ciminiere exhibition center are about 15 minutes' walk away. It is also close to the Italia metro station. The metro provides quick access to both the train station (Stazione F.S.) and Borgo station, from where Circumetnea trains leave.
In the southern part of Catania is the most popular city beach - La Playa(La Plaia). It is sandy, wide and long. The entrance to the water is gentle and long - you don’t have to worry about children. But if you like to swim in the sea, then this is not the best. the best place(platform beaches in this sense are preferable). From here to historical center Catania is again about half an hour walk. However, unlike the area discussed above, the area between the Old Town and La Playa beach is not very conducive to walking (noisy roads with active traffic, there is a lot of garbage on the streets, and it is not safe to walk here at night). Therefore, it is hardly worth choosing this place in order to combine a beach holiday with walks in Catania, and there are almost no accommodation options here. As one of the few exceptions, one can only mention the small family hotel Sciara Biscari B&B. It is literally a five-minute walk from the beach, and the center of Catania can always be reached from here by bus (or on foot - 15–20 minutes). This is a plus. But, unfortunately, there are also disadvantages. Firstly, going (both to the sea and to the center) is not very convenient. And secondly, the beach in this part is crowded and not clean (if we talk about free sections of the coast). In addition, the entrance to the port of Catania is located nearby, which cannot be called a plus either.
Beaches on the outskirts and in the suburbs of Catania

The further south (that is, the farther from the city center), the better - fewer people, cleaner. Therefore, if you are interested in relaxing on the sandy beach of La Playa, then it makes sense to look at hotels like NH Catania Parco degli Aragonesi and Romano Palace Luxury Hotel. These are not the cheapest hotels, and they have their drawbacks (read the reviews on the links), but in any case, there is nothing better here. True, you can’t walk from these hotels to the historical center of Catania on foot - it’s too far. So you have to take a taxi or take a bus (Linea D route, see www.amt.ct.it). But near the airport. Therefore, it will be convenient to stop here immediately upon arrival in Catania or for a couple of days before departure.

Getting to Fregene is easy: half an hour by train (FL5 line, ticket price 2.6 euros) from (Termini) in the direction of Civitavecchia to Maccares-Fregene station, then 4 kilometers by bus - and you are at the epicenter nightlife. By the way, Santa Marinella is located on the same branch (more on it below), and from the end station of this branch, Civitavecchia, you can get to a whole scattering of beaches: San’t Agostino, La Frasca and Pirgo.

Sabaudia (Sabaudia)
Sabaudia is another proud owner blue flag, golden sands and clear sea. Despite the obvious advantages, it remains one of the least visited beaches in Rome, but only because of the inconvenient road. From Termini Station, the train to Priverno-Fossanova takes 50-55 minutes, the trip costs 5 euros, but then you have to travel another 20 minutes on the Cotral bus, and then go down the wooden stairs. Sabaudia has another advantage: there are quite a few free sites on its coast, as well as campsites.
Pontine Islands (Isole Ponziane)
The Pontine Islands are an archipelago located between Rome and Naples. You will have to get here by ferry, which runs from the seaside towns of Anzio, Formia and Terracina. Most of the hotels are located on two islands: (Ponza) and Ventotene (Ventotene). The ferry journey will take from 50 minutes to an hour and a half.

If you want to get to know the Italian province - buy a ticket from two segments: Rome-Bracciano, Bracciano-Viterbo (Viterbo). Lake Martignano (Lago di Martignano)
