Historical and Literary Museum

The Literary Museum is the main attraction of Taldom. The institution is located in the city center at the address: Saltykov-Shchedrin Street, 41. Which is very symbolic, because most of the exhibits in this museum are associated with the name of this particular figure in Russian literature.

In the historical and literary museum of Taldom you can see personal items, books, diaries, photographs and autographs of those writers, critics and poets whose life and work were associated with this region. The Taldom Museum is visited by about five thousand people every year.

Architectural sights of Taldom

The attention of tourists in Taldom is also attracted by numerous architectural monuments. For example, the literary museum, which we have already talked about above, is located in the beautiful estate of Volkov. This is the oldest stone building in the whole city. But the city library is located in the estate of the local merchant Kiselyov. This house stands out from the rest with its tiny kokoshniks.

The main architectural symbol of Taldom is, of course, the fire station complex built at the beginning of the last century. In 2013, this building was rebuilt using old (authentic) bricks. After reconstruction, it housed the city registry office of Taldom.

There is another one next to the fire tower. architectural monument- Church of the Archangel Michael. This temple was built in early XIX century. In 1870, it was decorated with a unique faience iconostasis, fragments of which have survived to this day. The interiors of the temple were badly damaged during the Soviet era, when it housed a shoe factory. Today, the shrine is gradually being restored.

The Saltykov estate in the village of Spas-Ugol

Fifteen kilometers from Taldom is the tiny village of Spas-Ugol. It is the "family nest" of Mikhail Evgrafovich Saltykov-Shchedrin. The famous Russian writer and journalist was born here on January 15, 1826. He lived on this estate until 1836. The writer's memoirs about life in this village can be found in his last book called "Poshekhonskaya antiquity".

In 1918, it burned down in the village of Spas-Ugol. Only the Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior with an expressive three-tiered bell tower has survived. Today it houses the Saltykov-Shchedrin Museum.

Another curious fact about this small village: in 1887, on the outskirts of Spas-Angle, Balloon with Dmitri Mendeleev on board. The great scientist watched the solar eclipse from it.

Porcelain factory in Verbilki

The history of the porcelain and faience industry in Russia dates back almost three centuries. There is everything for its development in the European part of the country Natural resources: kaolin, feldspar, quartz and plastic clay. One of the oldest enterprises for the production of porcelain products in Russia is a factory in Verbilki, a village located south of the city of Taldom.

The porcelain factory in Verbilki was founded in 1766. The products of this manufactory were of excellent quality. Already at the end of the 18th century, on the products of the plant one could see the image of the Moscow coat of arms - a kind of quality mark of that period.

In the Soviet period of history, the plant launched the production of mass, but sufficiently high-quality products - dishes and figurines. This company has survived economic crisis 90s. Today, it is one of three operating porcelain factories in Russia.

My love for the buildings of the 18-19th century (factory buildings made of red brick, with beautiful patterns on the facades) is known to all my friends.

I could not help but go to the legendary plant. The factory where Kuznetsov worked in 1766-1891 was founded by the English merchant F.Ya. Gardner in the village of Verbilki. Among private porcelain enterprises, the Gardner factory was distinguished by its high technical and artistic level.

It used to be like that .... now everything is changing. And the building does not look like a masterpiece of architecture. And the production is not in favor ....

I went towards Verbilki on an autumn day. Golden warm autumn was just giving way to light rains... Eeeeh, I love this kind of weather! In central Russia, this time is not like any exotic. Simple, sweet Russian autumn.

The road led through Dmitrov, the city is beautiful, you can walk for a long time ...... the mayor of the city, apparently, is a big fan of local sculptors .. There are many different objects on the squares .....

The road itself is great. I rode with great pleasure. I even had time to look around...

Arriving at the factory, I met with Tatyana, the factory's guide. She took me through every room.

I must say that I got my dose of pleasure. Old factory hangars with ceilings of 12 meters. Furnaces 96 meters long. All equipment from the century before last... Just kidding! It only looks like this - in fact, the 60s and 70s of the past ....

100% manual production....no automation (although there are material supply lines .... and all sorts of twists and turns that do not fit well under the term "equipment"

Of course, you can't drink away history and culture! Power and glory are still felt... but not much...

Although, the children will be interested. Moreover, the plant (according to rumors) does not have long to exist .... The premises are painfully tasty ..... And the new owner, judging by appearance production, does not intend to invest in the development of this industry.

And the masters work there ... Golden hands, skills and spiritual qualities .... Modest people who have been doing their job for years. This is strange ..... But it is so ...

In short, my fotik passed out. I filmed on the phone ... and not all.
There is something to see in Verbilki.... to touch.... you can even draw.
Stamping halls - uuuuh, as I visited in the last century ... each plate is made by hand, each saucer, cup, teapot .... eeeeee the standard hangs over the master - 2,300 plates a day !!!

Casting masters are striking - huge racks lined with identical figures .... and their molds for casting. The technology is still ancient, each item is made for at least 10 days. Each cup handle is cast separately, then cut at a certain angle, then glued. Horror-horror... A woman sits on the cutting of handles for years... and cuts-cuts-cuts... These are not modern speeds, here everything is done with calculation and calmness. I was amazed that the 1st firing takes 8 hours, and the 2nd - the whole day. I wish the Chinese had such speeds .... if only their development of production would have turned sour completely !!!

Beautiful and well-groomed only in painting workshops .. By the way, they paint the premium class with real gold (I felt this when I studied the prices in the company store - Snow Maiden, which is lower - more than 2500 costs .....) Artists are masters the highest level... No one's hand trembles .....

In general, I would go again ... and take the children. Excursion with a master class - children will be interested. True, children are not taught to draw on MK. But we will fix it. "Peppilotta" is developing an excursion with a live, interactive MK - children will receive a high-quality, beautiful cup (painted with their own hands) ... They will simply paint it under the guidance of an artist. After the tour, you can eat in a cafe opposite .... A wonderful owner of a cafe, attentive and sympathetic. Feeds the kids from Hood. Verbilok School. The café is licensed to serve children. So - go and do not be afraid, the children will be happy ..

and a few more pictures - from the life of Verbilkovskaya nature - these modest cups are the most laborious way of painting, underglaze. After firing, the gray becomes bright cobalt and seems to glow from within...
And this is local nature, and a modern elevator looks brutal. .

And also I am negotiating to visit an art school in Verbilki (with guidance). Children will be able to see where you can learn how to draw on porcelain so beautifully. The school has all the conditions for teaching visiting children. Nice and interesting job...
