Where is the best place to go in Cyprus. Where to go in Cyprus with a child: the best resorts, attractions, places of interest and reviews

The number of long-distance travel enthusiasts is constantly growing, preferring, instead of package tours, to travel on their own in their own or rented car. Cyprus, with its magnificent roads, clear markings and short distances, is perfect for this purpose. Moreover, public transport on the island does not play such an important role as in Greece or Turkey. Before the trip, motorists will have to decide what to see in Cyprus on their own by car. Most often, tourists choose several of the most interesting places.

Vacationers should definitely go to Cyprus by car to the capital of the republic. First of all, Nicosia will be of interest to lovers of medieval architecture. You can especially clearly feel the important role of the ancient city in the history of the country, standing at the remains of the Venetian walls, which once successfully defended it from enemy attacks. A fairly long part of the 5-kilometer defensive structure has been preserved, rebuilt after significant destruction in 1974.

For connoisseurs of Western European painting, the halls of the art gallery, located inside the luxurious building of the Archbishop's Palace, are open in the city. Shopping lovers will not be disappointed, for whom the Mall of Cyprus, a gigantic shopping and entertainment complex, has been built here. Those who want to see all the famous buildings of the city go to Shakolas. In this shopping center on the 11th floor, a spacious observation deck awaits them.

Famous mountain

One of the most famous places that tourists prefer to see on their own in Cyprus is the picturesque Troodos. This mountain range is known primarily thanks to Olympus. Many travelers confuse this 1952-meter mountain with a Greek peak, consonant with its name. During the warm season, these places attract passionate fans of hours of hiking along forest paths, carefully laid between tall cypresses and fluffy pines. In winter, the slopes of the mountain become a place of pilgrimage for skiers, for whom 9 magnificent trails are equipped here.

Konnos Bay

For travelers wondering where to go on their own in search of a secluded and quiet beach, Konnos Bay is one of the worthy destinations. It is only 2 kilometers away from Protaras. This 200 meter long beach is known for its light volcanic sand, absence of high waves and strong winds. Groups of snorkeling fans gather here especially often. Motorists will have no problems accessing the beach - there is a special ramp for cars here.

Kato Paphos

To see the remains of the ancient city and wander its streets, it is worth visiting Kato Paphos. This archaeological park is well known not only to those who like digging in the distant past. This place became famous primarily due to the ancient mosaics, partially preserved in some of the villas, destroyed by time and winds. Here you can also become spectators of musical performances at the Odeon arena, a reconstructed ancient amphitheater.

Rock of Aphrodite

For those travelers who travel from Paphos or Limassol, it will not be difficult to turn off the road to the stone of the goddess of love, which lies very close to the coast between these two resorts. Most often it is called the more romantic rock of Aphrodite. Having bathed in cold water and circled the stone three times, one can hope for the return of youth, as well as the fulfillment of cherished desires. Legends well-known to tourists speak about it.

Cape Greco

For those who are vacationing in Protaras or Ayia Napa, it is easy to go to Cape Greco, which is located near both famous resorts. Young couples come here with pleasure and immerse themselves in the romantic atmosphere created by beautiful sunsets. There are several cozy gazebos and benches for them. Scuba divers rush here not only in search of the mysterious monster that local legends speak about, but also in order to explore the life of the inhabitants of the deep sea.

Unique village

Only 42 kilometers separate the bustling Limassol from the quiet Omodos - an original village famous for its wine-making traditions. Its inhabitants manage to work and manage their household as if nothing had changed here for more than two centuries. Zivania, Afames, as well as other strong drinks produced in the village are known not only in Cyprus. The guests of the village certainly try to visit the Monastery of the Holy Cross, where the relics of the saints well known to Cypriots are carefully kept.

Picturesque peninsula

Once on Akamas, tourists immediately notice the dissimilarity of the nature of this peninsula to those landscapes that are usually found in Cyprus. This protected area will not surprise you with luxurious beaches or resorts. But the world of local fauna and flora is striking in its diversity. Here you can find:

  • strawberry trees;
  • Cypriot mouflons;
  • royal oaks;
  • green sea turtles;
  • purple peonies;
  • foxes;
  • myrtle trees, as well as many other plants and animals.

On this peninsula, among the dense thickets "hid" the swimming pool of Aphrodite. Many tourists try to get closer to this famous grotto, where, as legends say, the goddess of love once bathed.

Monastery

The desire to visit Stavrovouni on their own - a medieval monastery located next to Larnaca - comes to every traveler who at least once managed to watch a film about it or see its image in photographs. It is much easier for motorists than for ordinary tourists to get to this place. An excellent road winding serpentine along the mountain slope leads to the monastery. In just 15–20 minutes, tourists are already at the top. From a height of 700 meters, the natural landscapes of the picturesque surroundings seem to be frames from a fantasy film.

Medieval castle

About 10 kilometers from the crowded Limassol, the silent bulk of a 25-meter medieval tower rises. It has survived much better than all the other structures of Kolossi, a defensive fortress erected by the Venetians in the middle of the 15th century. Inquisitive travelers are attracted by the desire to wander among the remains of an old sugar factory on their own or to enter well-preserved wine cellars. The flat roof of the tower perfectly copes with the role of a spacious observation deck.

Traveling in a comfortable car will certainly give many advantages over those travelers who are tied to pre-designed package tour programs. So that the rest is not overshadowed by unpleasant surprises, motorists should follow the advice and rules of those who know this island well:

  • by purchasing a car with an automatic transmission, tourists save themselves from problems with left-hand traffic;
  • there will be no obstacles for those wishing to rent a good car on the island - there are rental offices in every city, and the cost for 3 days from € 30–38 to € 60–64 will be quite satisfactory for most auto tourists;
  • it is better to stay closer to the coast in inexpensive hotels or cottages;
  • when inspecting the fortifications, you should wear comfortable shoes and protect yourself with a headdress from the scorching summer sun.

The main thing that will never disappoint travelers on the picturesque island is the excellent roads and the kindness of smiling Cypriots.

Paphos

© Photo Henry Hemming / flickr.com

The resort is known primarily as the birthplace of Aphrodite. The city is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. For a comfortable stay in Paphos there are modern shops and hotels, clear sea and beaches, monuments of ancient history.

Today we will tell where better to go to Cyprus... Informatively, according to the resorts, we will analyze where it is better to go and why. Immediately I will make a reservation that we will talk about rest directly on the territory of the Republic of Cyprus, there will be a separate article about rest on the Turkish part of the island.

So, the most famous resorts in Cyprus are Ayia Napa and Paphos - these are two places where most of the tourists flock. But there are other, no less interesting cities where you can go.

I will share my impressions, about everything in order, so Where is the best place to go to Cyprus?

Ayia Napa

Let's start with Ayia Napa, which is often compared to Ibiza. This is understandable, because by and large people come here to hang out. A huge number of bars and clubs are conducive to noisy parties at night. Ayia Napa wakes up at sunset.

But this resort in Cyprus is famous not only for its grandiose parties. Ayia Napa has many beautiful white sand beaches.

Here you can meet desperate teenagers, newlyweds, married couples with small children (yes, many parents, wondering where better to go to Cyprus with a child choose Ayia Napa), elderly people. In short, absolutely everyone goes to Ayia Napa. Perhaps the most interesting thing is that everyone here feels comfortable and relaxed. Everyone rests only the way he loves, no one bothers anyone. There is plenty of entertainment for every taste and age.

Protaras

My dear and very favorite resort in Cyprus is wonderful Protaras, which is 15-20 minutes' drive from Ayia Napa. Before I first came to Cyprus, I heard only about Ayia Napa, Paphos, Limassol and not a word about Protaras. But Protaras has stunning beaches, in some places even better than in the promoted Ayia Napa. It is very cozy here, somehow at home, calm, but not boring.

I would recommend this resort for those aged 25 and over if you don't have a daily nightclub in your plans. And if you think about where better to go to Cyprus with children, then definitely take a look at Protaras.

Larnaca

Quite a nice city, where one of the main airports of the island is located. There are good beaches, decent hotels. Perfect for a budget holiday. You can rent a car and go on a trip around the island.

Limassol

Limassol gives the impression of a certain business center of the island of Cyprus. One gets the feeling that most of the people come here on business, and to be at the sea for a couple of days as a bonus. There are a lot of cafes, bars, restaurants, shops, entertainment centers available. There are beaches, but for me it is somehow not very advisable to go to Limassol for a beach vacation, as there are more beautiful and better equipped beaches. There is a place to be on the beach here, but for tourists it is rather a large shopping center where you can buy a couple of beautiful gizmos. It is also important to consider the fact that the beach is next to a road where such traffic jam is normal. Firstly, it is noisy, and secondly, after all, the air is not the cleanest.

If I chose where better to go to Cyprus for a vacation, it is unlikely that this city came out on top. The only thing that makes sense to go here is if you plan to take a car and drive around the island every day, since it is from Limassol that it is convenient to get to any place on the island of Cyprus.

Pathos

The last time we were in Cyprus was in May 2016, we stopped at Paphos. The whole city is like after a massacre. Road repairs are everywhere, tourists have to walk on the carriageway or on broken roads. There is a lot of rubbish everywhere, somehow everything is dull, to be honest. I don't know why everyone praises this resort with such a bright name and such a sour atmosphere. But I think, or rather want to believe, that these were temporary difficulties, and the country's authorities are making every effort, trying to ennoble the resort of Paphos.

On the famous Coral Bay beach in Paphos, there is a completely unrealistic number of people (and this is not the high season yet), you cannot find a toilet with fire in the daytime, the descent to the beach is again all in bumps, and there is dirt around from tourists, because there is no not a single trash can. My husband and I did not understand at all why, when you ask, where better to go to Cyprus, many advise Paphos. There is no smell of elite rest here. There is nowhere to walk outside the hotel, there is nothing to see if you walk, since there is nothing interesting in the vicinity.

In general, I have such sad feelings from Paphos. But do not rush to lose heart, it turns out that Paphos has several decent hotels and beaches, you just need to know the names. Rest there is measured calm, everything around is well-groomed and beautiful. If interested, ask questions in the comments.

It depends entirely on what you want from the rest. We have briefly covered the advantages and disadvantages of each resort, the choice is yours!

Airlines are expanding their flight program from Cyprus: some are returning after a short absence, others are optimizing the route map, and still others are only planning flights from Larnaca and Paphos. So far, there are no direct flights from Cyprus to America, China and Australia. But representatives of the aviation industry are already calculating whether the island of Aphrodite can become a transport hub on the way from Europe to Asia and Australia, and how profitable these directions can be.

In an interview with ttgmedia.com, Marketing and Public Relations Manager at Larnaca and Paphos Airports, Maria Kurupi, admitted that Cyprus lacks direct flights to Prague, Geneva and Gdansk. In addition, it would be worth establishing regular flights with Barcelona and Madrid. There could be more flights to France and Italy, for example, the potential on the Milan route is still underestimated.

The excursion program in Cyprus is not very diverse. In addition to standard boat trips, jeep safaris, fishing, water parks and diving on the island, local travel agencies organize excursions inland to religious sites.

The cost of group excursions starts from 50 euros, while the quality does not always match the price. Below are the most popular ones.

If you have a group of 2-3 people, and the beach holiday is thoroughly bored, it is advisable to order an individual sightseeing tour of the island, during which you will see all the most interesting and get a lot of information from personal communication with the guide.

An alternative option is to explore the island on your own.
