Gournes is a tourist resort located 16 km east of Heraklion between Kokkini Hani and Gouves. The Gournes region is a large fertile plain with many olive and vegetable crops. Previously these were several villages, but the development of tourism in the Gournes region has united the coastline, which now starts from Vatyanos Kampos and ends after 23 kilometers in Malia. Gournes is located on the third kilometer. Like most beaches on the northern coast of Crete, the beaches of Gournes are very vulnerable to the wind. The Gournes promenade is full of small artificial bays that form between the breakwaters. Most of the coves are sandy, especially in the west of Gournes, where there are umbrellas, sun loungers and lifeguards. If you go east, the beach is rocky and you will see a local river.

Made or Mades is a small coastal village located in the Lygaria region, 20 km west of Heraklion and 1.5 km east of Lygaria beach. It is located near the northernmost edge of the Gulf of Heraklion, namely Cape Buruni in Rogdia. To get here from Heraklion, you need to take the exit from the national highway in the direction of Logaria and after 1.5 km you will see a sign for Made. In front of the village there is a very small cove with pebbles, which is surrounded by many rocks and chaotic buildings, a peaceful and cozy settlement. This is not a very organized beach, although there is a large hotel here that has equipped the beach with umbrellas and sun loungers for its guests. Nearby there are several rooms for rent, a beach bar, a mini market and taverns. The beach is very calm and is often preferred by local residents who have built their holiday homes here. This is an ideal place for fishing and snorkeling, and the rocky bottom is filled with an abundance of fish. A well-known sign of the beach is two small rocks in the west, which are worth seeing with a mask. The main problem of Made is the northern part, which is vulnerable to winds.

The bays (Limanakya) of Hersonissos are located 27 km east of Heraklion - these are successive bays starting from Cape Sarantaris and extending east to the port of Chersonissos. These are truly beautiful beaches with calm waters, and Sarantaris Cape protects them from the waves. Access to them is easy and their surroundings are well developed. Noisy Hersonissos is a short walk away, but if you want to stroll in the evening to Limanakia (in the bays), there are several bars with quiet music. Let's look at the beaches one by one, starting from the west. The westernmost beach that you will see in Limanakia is essentially not a beach, but a large smooth stone (pier) where you can swim. Located immediately next (to the west) to the rocky coast of Sarantaris, next to the picturesque church of St. George. Next to the church there is a staircase leading to a cliff, where nearby hotels put umbrellas and sun loungers. There are platforms here from which you can dive. Snorkeling next to the pier rocks is a very good choice. Then, just below the vertical limestone cliffs, at the base of the Sarantaris Peninsula, is a beautiful sandy beach with turquoise water. This is our favorite beach in the Chersonesos region. Compared to other beaches, the beach at the foot of Sarantaris is better protected from waves (as a small peninsula shelters it from bad weather). There are not many people on the beach. And not because it is not known, but because (fortunately) access to it is difficult. You need to go down a slightly difficult cliff. Unless, of course, you have a boat.

Amoudara is a huge beach that starts 1 km west of the city center of Heraklion and reaches the mouth of the Almiros River, 7 km west. Amoudara is considered a suburb of Heraklion, which is developed touristically thanks mainly to its huge beach. Amoudara Beach, as the name suggests, is a large beach of fine brown sand. It's so big that it offers a lot of options for everyone: those who like a lot of people and those who don't like it at all. Along the coast there is an organized beach with sun loungers, umbrellas, beach bars, lifeguards, showers, changing rooms, water sports and everything you can imagine. In the evening, the center of the beach (6 km west of Heraklion) is bustling with life as there are plenty of entertainment options.

Lygaria (Wicker) is located 21 km west of Heraklion and 1 km east of Agia Pelagia. Ligarya Bay is closed and protected from the winds. In Lygaria there are the remains of the old monastery of Panagia Lygarias, where many monks lived in the past. Thus, the place took its name from the monastery, which in turn took its name from the beautiful wicker plant with flexible branches and beautiful pink flowers, which are abundant in this area. The beach is very beautiful, with coarse sand and turquoise water, and the small boats make the scenery magical. The eastern part of the beach is less protected from waves and more garbage collects here. If you go west, the water there becomes cleaner and calmer. There are smooth stones along the entire beach at the entrance to the water, except for the western part, where there is sand. It is very well organized with umbrellas, water sports, diving, beach bars, taverns and hotels. Especially on weekends it is crowded, as thousands of locals prefer to relax here. There are even difficulties with parking.

Paleokastro is located 14 km west of Heraklion, on the western shore of the large Gulf of Heraklion. This picturesque pebble beach is formed at the exit of a green valley where streams flow down from the village of Rogdia. The Gulf of Paliokastro is protected on two sides by high cliffs and faces east. On the eastern side of the beach there is a huge limestone rock, on top of which Palaiokastro, a Venetian fortress that protected Heraklion Bay from enemy attacks, once stood. This Castle is part of the wall that has survived. It is believed to have been built on the acropolis of the ancient city of Kytheon.

Potamos is a long sandy beach, well organized, but clearly less crowded than the main beach of Malia. This area, especially in the east, is not very well developed due to archaeological excavations. However, at the western end of the beach there are several hotels with small coves in front of them. Around Potamos there are sand dunes where white sand lilies appear in all their glory in autumn.

Kokkinos Pyrgos (Red Tower) is located 67 km southwest of Heraklion and very close to the town of Tympaki. The name is associated with the tower, which was built from casing clay, which is why it was called red. The purpose of the tower's existence is currently unknown. The seaside village of Timbaki, where the region's port is located, is tourism developed. There are many hotels, restaurants and cafes in Kokinos Pyrgos. The climate is particularly warm, as evidenced by the many greenhouses with fresh vegetables. At the front of the village there is a very long sandy beach that starts west of the town and extends many kilometers east to Kommos. This huge beach is home to Caretta Caretta sea turtles, which lay their eggs here in the summer and are protected by public organizations. Kokinos Pyrgos beach starts in the west from the Timpaki military airfield and stretches west to Agia Galina, and is completely exposed to south-westerly winds.

Malia is the most tourist town in Crete, located 35 km east of Heraklion. It is famous for its vibrant nightlife and the third largest Minoan palace in Crete. Malia could not develop as a tourist destination if it were not for its beach. Malia Beach is the eastern part of a huge 6 km long beach that starts from Stalida. This is a wide beach with fine sand and shallow water, but there is no room for a needle to fall between the umbrellas and sun loungers. Here you can really find everything you could want. Besides the traditional umbrellas and water sports, here you will find massage services, sand fitness, a pool bar, hotels and much more.

Karteros Bay is located 7 km east of Heraklion and extends 3-4 km east. Named after the Byzantine general Kratero, who in 824 landed to liberate Crete from the Saracens but was defeated. There are two settlements in the bay: Carter and Amnisos. The area is so developed that the two settlements are now united. The main reason for the rapid development of the area is its close location to Heraklion and a huge beach with fine golden sand. The sandy beach stretches along the bay for 3 km; there are many hotels, restaurants and beach bars nearby. All of Carter Bay is exposed to winds and mostly has waves. The sea is shallow, the bottom is without rocks and only in a few places there are stones. The calmest part of the beach is located next to Nikos Kazantzakis Airport, 7 km west of Heraklion. This part is called Florida (from one tavern of the same name operating here in the 70s-80s), this is the calmest beach of all the nearby beaches. There are no umbrellas or infrastructure compared to the eastern beaches. In Florida there is a river that flows out of the Carteros Gorge, which is worth a visit in the spring. In front of the beach there is a small lake that dries up in the summer. Also, in Florida, you should visit the Church of St. John and St. Nikon, which is built inside a large cave. Finally, don't be surprised if you see horses on the beach; the Heraklion Riding Club is nearby. 1 km to the east, in the middle of the large Karteros Bay, there is the eponymous Karteros beach, which is very well developed and has many beach bars. Here you can enjoy your holiday with all the necessary amenities. A few meters to the east there is Ksenia Beach. Named after the old government hotel, which is now abandoned. Xenia has beach bars and a developed beach that attracts many people.

The village of Analipsis (Ascension) is located 20 km east of Heraklion and takes its name from the Church of the Ascension of Christ. Situated in the center of a fertile valley that cultivates vegetables and olives. The settlement at the beginning of the 20th century was called Svuru Metohi from a Turk who had some property here before. Analipsis was abandoned by shepherds from Agios Georgios (Svaytoi Georgiy), which is located on the Lasithi Plateau, wintering with their animals here, since the climate of the Plateau is very cold in winter. Now the happy descendants of Agiogeorgievites have huge fortunes in the region with hotels, shops, restaurants and all kinds of tourist infrastructure. Analipsis is less developed touristically than the surrounding areas and is considered a favorite family destination for its tranquility and quality holidays. At the front of the village there is a small pier with a picturesque church nearby dedicated to St. Marina. To the west the coast is rocky, except for a small harbor with sand, and to the east is the large coast of Analipsis, this large beach is very well organized and vulnerable to winds. The sea is not very deep with fine sand.

Kali Limenes is located 75 km west of Heraklion and is the largest coastal village of the Asterousia Mountains. One of the few coastal areas of Asterousia that can be reached by paved road. To get here you need to drive through the villages of Pobiya Messara and Pigaidakya. The road is narrow and dangerous with many sharp turns, but it's worth it. There is a second path that leads to Kali Limenes from the monastery of Hodigitrias, which is chosen mainly by those who are already Agiofarago or those who want to admire the wild nature of the Asterousia Mountains. The first beach you will see moving east from Pigaidak is called Makria Ammos (big sands). This is the largest beach with dark gray gravel and deep waters. To the east there are several rocks in the sea. The large stone near the shore is called Aspros Volakas, and the one located further away is called Black Volakas. The further east you go, the calmer the beach becomes. To the east you will see several nudists enjoying life. Makria Ammos beach is also known as Armirikya and Dendra (trees) because there are many trees that line the shore and provide shade for visitors. So it's ideal for camping, but not on weekends. Additionally, you will hear many locals call Markria Ammos Sissamolakos, a name that comes from the cultivation of sesame (soussami) during the Venetian period. The beach is not very organized; in the west there are several taverns and one private hotel owned by the Vardinoyannis family.

Kladissos is located 21 km northwest of Heraklion and west of the village of Agia Pelagia. The beach is located in front of the largest hotel in the region, which occupies the entire area of Souda Bay. Access can be made along the same path that leads to Psaromur (starts 100m north of the hotel), but in an easterly direction. The beach has fine gravel and the green color of the sea, which is almost always calm. It is very well organized and has hotel umbrellas, bars, showers and changing rooms for guests. The beach may seem private, but do not forget that all beaches in Greece are public and open to everyone. Kladissos is always quiet and peaceful, as locals prefer Agia Pelagia and few people know about this beach.

Kato(lower) Gouves is a popular tourist resort, located 18 km east of Heraklion, at the foot of Mount Ederi. On the plain of Kato Gouves, the inhabitants of the village of Ano(top) Gouves used to grow vegetables, olives and cereals. The name Gouves comes from the word guva (pit), in which grain is stored. Unlike the bustle of Malia and Hersonissos, (Kato) Gouves offers a more relaxing holiday. Here you will mainly see families enjoying the beautiful beaches close to all the necessary infrastructure. The beaches of Gouves are well organized with umbrellas, lifeguards, diving centers, water sports, showers, changing rooms, etc. It also has soft sand and shallow water (but vulnerable to winds). For this reason, small ports and piers were built in many places where you can swim when the waves are strong. The Gouves Coastal Road runs along the coast, making it easy for you to find the beach you want! In the evening you can stroll along the embankment and enjoy the sunset. There are also many cafes and restaurants on the promenade overlooking the sea. In addition, on the main street of Gouves you will find several supermarkets, shops, pharmacies, clinics and ATMs.

Psaromoura is located 22 km west of Heraklion, just 500 meters north of Agia Pelagia. Like all the beaches in the area it faces east, so is protected from the wind that usually blows in the region. There are no hotels or taverns right on the beach, but everything is within walking distance. The beach is pebbly and is especially popular among locals rather than foreigners. To the north there is a large, characteristic stone with many folds (phyllite is a typical stone of the region) that protects the beach from the waves. Another feature of the beach is that there is often a small boat tied to the pier, which makes the landscape look like a painting. Psaromura was completely unorganized a few years ago and was one of the most beautiful beaches on the island of Crete. Unfortunately, this paradise has become a business interest and has become an ordinary beach full of umbrellas, sun loungers with a small beach cafe. I completely understand those who managed to recognize Psaromour before the change, they miss his previous appearance. Recently, the Ecological Organizations of Crete asked for the umbrellas to be removed from the beach in order to return it to its original state. To get to Psaromur, you need to go to Agia Pelagia. After the Capsis Hotel, continue west 100m and turn right into the lane. After a few meters you will see a closed iron gate and a sign "To the Beach". Leaving the car, follow the path leading to the west, passing the gate you will soon see Psaromur. If it's the other way around, you'll head east to Kladissou Beach.

Fodele Beach is located 26 km northwest of Heraklion and just 3 km north of the village in which the artist Dominicos Theotokopoulos (El Greco) is believed to have been born. The Heraklion-Chania National Road passes next to the beach. This large beach is not exposed to winds, it is protected on the eastern side by Cape Stavros (Cross) and on the western side by the Kastelli hill, where the ruins of an old fortress are located. Fodele Beach is located at the outlet of the Pantomantri or Fodeleanu River. The western part is well organized with umbrellas, sun loungers, showers, water sports, cafes and taverns. In addition, a large hotel was built on the slope of Kastelos, in front of which there is a small pier. This pier "knocks down" the waves in the western part of the beach. If you want privacy, you can go to the eastern part of the beach near the gas station, this part of the beach is disorganized and also more vulnerable to winds.

Vatyanos Kampos is a tourist resort located 15 km east of Heraklion. Named after the village of Vatya, located a few kilometers to the south. The Vatyanos River also flows into Vatyanos Kampos, which dries up in the summer. The area has several adjacent bays, sandy beaches with crystal clear water. Since the coastal area faces north, waves are quite common here. That is why breakwaters were built in some places to protect from waves and wind. In Vatyanos Kampos there is perhaps the most equipped beach in the city of Heraklion - Arena. This is a large beach where thousands of Heraklion residents gather every day to enjoy their holiday!

Kommos is located 66 km southwest of Heraklion, just 2 km north of Matala and very close to the village of Kalamaki. Essentially, this is the southernmost part, but also the most isolated, of the huge continuous beach of Messara Bay. Kommos was once the ancient port of Phaistos and there are still remains of the town next to the beach. The road that leads to Matala will take you here until you see the Kommos sign. The entire area of the embankment is exposed to westerly winds, which blow almost constantly. Thus, you need to be careful because there are rocks in the sea, not just sand. The sea skull Caretta Caretta lays its eggs in the coarse sands of the coast from May to September. In the northern part of Kommos, the Potamos (river) has been a favorite nudist spot for many years, ever since hippies took over the area. There are only a few trees around, Kommos is a protected archaeological area, so building hotels is not allowed. In the south, next to the archaeological zone, there is an equipped beach with umbrellas, sun loungers, toilets, showers, a restaurant and lifeguards. Surrounded by many trees and huge sand dunes, here you can admire the white sand lilies that herald the end of summer. If you want to find a place to stay or have lunch, you can walk to the nearby village of Kalamaki or, if you have a car, drive to Pitsidia or Matala.

Kalamaki is a small coastal village located 65 km southwest of Heraklion between Matala and Timbaki. The beach opposite the village is only a small part (2.5 km) of the huge beach that stretches along the large Messara Bay. The beach has coarse sand and there is a large smooth slab in the water. Large waves, which usually rise with north-westerly winds, combined with a rocky bottom, make swimming and entering the sea difficult. In front of the village the beach is organized, there are umbrellas, sun loungers, restaurants, hotels, lifeguards, children's playground, water sports, etc., but if you want privacy, you can go east to Kommos, which is preferred by nudists.

Amoudi is located 19 km west of Heraklion, between the bays of Katarameno (cursed) in the west and Buruni Rogdias or Miti (nose) Rogdias (in the east) and north of the village of the same name in the area. Amoudi is a really beautiful beach with pebbles and turquoise water. Surrounded by high cliffs and to the east there are beautiful caves. Steep cliffs make Amoudi one of the most secluded beaches in the city of Heraklion. It is not accessible by car, although traces of the pre-1995 road leading to the beach are still visible. This road was destroyed by floods in the area and no longer exists. The only drawback is that the beach is not sheltered from the winds, which carry garbage to the shore. But when the sea is calm, the beach is ideal for privacy, if you have a boat of course.

Agia Pelagia is a small resort town on the island of Crete, 23 kilometers from Heraklion. The proximity to metropolitan life makes this a particularly attractive place to lie down on the beaches of the Aegean Sea under the Greek sun. Agia Pelagia is ideally located for exploring Crete by car or scooter.

The village is located in a bay and is surrounded by the sea on the north and mountains on the other three sides, which makes a holiday here idyllic. Several long sandy beaches to choose from, crystal clear seas, calm even in strong winds - steep cliffs protect the beaches of Agia Pelagia from the winds. At the same time, there is everything you need for life, perhaps, except for nightclubs.

Agia Pelagia (Αγία Πελαγία) is a seaside tourist town located on the northern coast of the island of Crete about 20 km from the city of Heraklion. Agia Pelagia is comfortably hidden away from the new national highway E75 in a picturesque bay with a wonderful sandy beach and well-developed tourist infrastructure, which has recently turned a quiet fishing village into a modern tourist resort - one of the most popular today. From the main highway of the island of Crete, three roads lead to the village, descending directly to the center of the village.

Your name Agia Pelagia received from the medieval monastery of St. Pelagia, which was the courtyard of the famous monastery of Savvathianon (Moni Savvathianon) in the Venetian era, located south of the village of Agia Pelagia on the road leading from the village of Rodia. Unfortunately, only the catholicon remains from the monastery of St. Pelagia. It is believed that the ancient city of Apollonia was located here, destroyed by Cydonia in 171 BC. A little north of the bay of Agia Pelagia, in the town of Kladissos, interesting archaeological finds were made. Carved dome-shaped tombs from the late Minoan period, prytanaeum, dating back to the 4th century BC were found in the rocks. ceramic workshop and dwellings built from Middle Minoan to Roman times. But, despite the rich history of the city that was previously located here, the village of Agia Pelagia appeared here not so long ago - only in 1965, when unremarkable lands began to be bought from local residents at very low prices. And no one then could have imagined how popular the village would become decades later. Now there are a variety of shops, restaurants, cafes and taverns, pharmacies, rental offices for any type of transport, excursion companies, etc.

Agia Pelagia cannot boast of nightlife, but it is a great place for a relaxing holiday for those who are vacationing with children or want to relax in an atmosphere of tranquility and unity with nature. The infrastructure here is quite well established. There are three ways to get to the village: by bus from Heraklion, by taxi or by rented car. Buses run regularly, but quite rarely (about once every 1-2 hours) and not until late in the evening. The schedule changes periodically, so it is better to check it on the spot.

The main advantage and reason for the active development of the village Agia Pelagia is the protection of the bay from northern winds, which often drive large waves in the coastal zone. Thanks to such a favorable location of the bay, the sea here always remains relatively calm even in a decent storm caused by the north wind. And the wonderful beach allows both adults and the youngest tourists to relax here. However, it is worth considering that the entry into the sea is quite abrupt.

To the north of the main beach of the village there are more secluded pebble beaches that are slightly more exposed to northerly winds: Kladissos, Psaromoura, Mononaftis. To the southeast of the central beach there is a beautiful beach in the village of Lygaria.

In Agia Pelagia you can stay in a large hotel or apartment, or rent a private home or villa. When choosing a hotel or accommodation, you need to take into account the peculiarities of the local landscape. The fact is that Agia Pelagia was built in the form of an amphitheater, and the further the housing is from the sea, the higher it will be above sea level. Therefore, the top hotels will be more suitable for tourists who like to go on foot or for owners of a rented car.

In conclusion, I would like to say that for any tourist, the first acquaintance with the village Agia Pelagia starts from the new national road, running at an altitude of approximately 150-180 meters above sea level, from where the village of Agia Pelagia looks especially beautiful and impressive. This view is really worth stopping at least for a minute on the side of the road and admiring the breathtaking view... White houses gently hugging the bay of the village, a colorful variety of shades of the coastline, yachts and fishing boats at sea, endless sea spaces and indescribable comfort. .. All this becomes the subject for many paintings and photographs taken in these places.

If we talk about winter weather in Agia Pelagia, it should be noted that it is quite difficult to call it winter, since at the height of winter, that is, in the month of January, the air temperature drops to a maximum of fourteen degrees with a positive value.

HOLIDAY PRICES:

Prices for holidays in Agia Pelagia. May 2014.

tour cost

We purchased the tour from Mouzenidis Travel. It was decided to buy a minimum package: flight, transfer, accommodation in a 3* apartment, breakfast, for 10 nights this package cost us 75 thousand rubles. for two adults and a child (1 year old). The price of the tour also included medical insurance and non-flight insurance.

The charter flight Moscow - Heraklion turned out to be very comfortable, the transfer from Heraklion to Agia Pelagia was fast, and it was precisely because of the duration of the transfer that this resort was chosen in the first place.

The only museum we went to during our vacation was the Natural History Museum in Heraklion. Entrance ticket for an adult is 8 euros.

Food and products

Agia Pelagia is a small village, mainly living from tourists, so there are a lot of taverns and shops there, literally at every turn. Prices in taverns practically do not differ from each other: salad - 3-4 euros; main course - 12 - 18 euros; large iced coffee - 1 - 1.5 euros; large pizza - from 6 to 8 euros;

In supermarkets we mainly bought baby food and diapers. "Libero" and "Pampers" -10 - 11 euros for a small package of 22 pieces. Canned purees from Nestlé with chicken and beef - 1.7 - 2 euros per 250 g can.

Souvenirs and other goods

We went to buy toys and children's clothes at the large Jumbo megamarket in Heraklion. Children's bodysuits, cotton, excellent quality - in the range of 0.75 - 1.5 euros. Excellent wooden puzzles and inserts - 1-2 euros

Cost of services and entertainment

Car rental - a new Opel Corso with automatic transmission, child seat and full insurance cost 50 euros per day. A little expensive, of course, but I needed an automatic. Mechanics are much cheaper. We rented the car from a small rental office, not from a large rental company. We didn't book in advance.

HOLIDAY REPORTS:

Alla Novikova

Impressions from a holiday in September

It’s just great in September in Crete! Very warm, without extreme heat, but always comfortable warmth. There aren't very many people anymore. There are no schoolchildren or students. Mainly families with small children and pensioners. There were a few couples, but who exactly wanted to relax, since the party is not about this place.

Vacation with children

This is not even a village, but a small tourist settlement. There is practically no entertainment there, which means there is no noise and noisy companies. Measured, sedate rest, unhurried. But this is not a forgotten place. There are shops, cafes and even one party bar for those who still want to diversify their holiday.

What to take with you on vacation?

It is worth taking all the things - there is little to buy on the spot, and the choice is small. Be sure to have a complete first aid kit. You can get to Heraklion in half an hour, but why, if you can take it with you. The right to rent a car - from here it is very convenient to drive around the entire island, it is located almost in the middle.

What to do at the resort?

Nearby is the village of Fodele - the birthplace of the artist El Greco. There is little educational information (only a house dedicated to the artist), but the atmosphere is very atmospheric. Nice quiet park with a playground and huge trees. Especially on sweltering days it’s just wonderful there. Local residents take advantage of the fact that tourists often stop by - there is a whole alley with trading stalls - lace, pottery, wickerwork, other handmade goods, and all sorts of ordinary tourist souvenirs. There are several restaurants, but the food is not very good.

In half an hour you can drive to the capital of the island - Heraklion. It’s not particularly interesting there, you can stroll along the embankment, walk along the long bridge to the fortress.

Just a great beach. It's small, but there aren't many people there. There is sand on the shore, sometimes white pebbles. Sunbeds cost 4 euros. The entry into the sea is not very shallow, but gradual. There are no noisy entertainments on the shore, which is very good. There are catamarans and boats. If you take a catamaran, you can sail to a gorgeous deserted beach - it is to the left of ours, behind the rock.

You can swim in the sea with a mask - there are fish, hedgehogs, and crabs. Very nice variety.

Oh, and in the middle there is a small natural slab, it acts like a breakwater. But it doesn't bother me at all.

In Agia Pelagia itself there is no shopping at all. But in half an hour you can get to Heraklion. There is the main shopping street of Crete - it goes to the square with a fountain. There are all standard world brands, there are also local brands. There is plenty to choose from, but nothing particularly interesting. The prices are normal, you won’t find a super sale.

About 20 km west of the city of Heraklion is the beautiful tourist village (or town) of Agia Pelagia. Mostly people who come here are lovers of a quiet and relaxing beach holiday without night parties. There is, however, one nightclub, but you can’t hear any noise from it, everything is orderly and cultured.

At the same time, Agia Pelagia has everything you need for a normal holiday. These are taverns, souvenir shops, ATMs and a pharmacy. And the most important thing in Agia Pelagia is the magnificent sandy beaches, which have one advantage - they are located in coves and, therefore, protected from the wind. Therefore, here, as a rule, the sea is always quiet and calm. It warms up faster than in places where waves predominate due to the openness of the space. If you decide to come here with small children, then keep in mind that there is no entertainment for them here. Agia Pelagia is somewhat similar to the neighboring resort village Bali , where there are also no waves and which is also located among small coves.

The beaches in Agia Pelagia are sandy, with a gentle slope, but a little narrow, which some may find inconvenient in the high season. There is a line of taverns and shops along the beach. There are several beaches in Pelagia. The sparsely populated small-pebble beaches “Kladissos”, “Psaromoura” and “Mononaftis” are located somewhat north of the village, and are not far away on foot. In the opposite direction from the village there is the beach of the village “Lygaria” of the same name. The central beach of Pelagia is always packed to capacity with tourists, especially in high season, but there are changing rooms, showers and toilets here. Renting sunbeds and umbrellas will cost you about 7 euros per set. But no one forbids being on the beach with your own sun umbrella and bedding purchased at the nearest store. There is one not very pleasant moment on the central beach. There is a large stone slab in the water two meters from the shore. However, in calm, windless weather, it does not interfere with swimming at all.

The sand on the beach is very clean and walking on it is very pleasant/

The terrain in the village of Agia Pelagia is quite rugged; many hotels are located on a hill, which is not very comfortable to get to from the beach, especially for older people and mothers with strollers.
From the main national road to Agia Pelagia there are three roads leading to the village. The convenient location of the village, it is located almost in the center of the island, allows you to travel around Crete in all directions. Those. From here it is easy to reach both the west and the east of the island. One of the most popular excursions in Crete is a trip to the island of Santorini, ferries to which depart from Heraklion, and Heraklion is twenty kilometers from Pelagia. After such excursions you will have unforgettable travel reviews .
In the village itself there are several car and motorbike rental offices. The average price for renting a small car is about 30-35 euros per day, depending on insurance.

Taverns of Agia Pelagia. The most famous and popular tavern is called “Cri-Cri”. The prices here are high and there is enough pathos. Nearby there are simpler taverns where you will be fed deliciously, with love, but for less money. On average, lunch in such small taverns will cost you 20-25 euros for two with wine or beer. You can generally order a gyros for an inexpensive price and still have a tasty and satisfying lunch. There are many taverns in Agia Pelagia, for every taste and budget. A very good tavern “Stelios”, where you will really feel the Greek atmosphere and taste of traditional Greek cuisine.
There are a couple of supermarkets in the village, if you can call them that. They can easily buy diapers for babies, baby food and everything you need for a holiday with children. For those who are planning to relax in apartments, there are a couple of meat and cheese shops where you can buy all the necessary products.
Agia Pelagia is truly a unique holiday destination in Crete. Perhaps that is why many famous Russian stars and simply rich people, such as Plushenko, Kirkorov, L. Verbitskaya and many others, vacation here. For example, everyone remembers how Volochkova walked along the streets of Agia Pelagia in 2012, it was a real show.
Have a good holiday everyone!
