Nizhny Novgorod will delight and surprise amateurs, since it is here that museums vary widely in topics.

By tradition, acquaintance with the museums of the city begins with, which has absorbed several museums and towers. The construction of the complex dates back to the 14th century. The Kremlin hosts a permanent exhibition of works by N. Roerich, I. E. Repin and B. M. Kustodiev.

One of the most visited is the museum of the history of the OJSC "GAZ" plant, where retro cars are exhibited. Many exhibits remained in the world in the singular and are the stars of Soviet cinema, as they starred in the famous films of Mosfilm.

The Technical Museum will be of interest to travelers of all ages. The museum is quite new, it opened in 2014. The exposition shows the technical innovations of the 19th century, which for us already seem outdated, but made a splash on the inhabitants of the millennium before last. Although, the purpose of some of the exhibits in our time, without an explanation of the guide, will not be able to guess.

Tours from Nizhny Novgorod: excursions in the surroundings 2019

In addition to short sightseeing and thematic walks, you can purchase one-day excursions or routes for at least half a day. As a rule, these are field trips from Nizhny Novgorod to neighboring towns and villages that deserve the closest attention. For example, cozy and picturesque, founded in 1152, or Arzamas - with architectural monuments that keep the history of bygone eras.

One of the most iconic destinations from Nizhny Novgorod is. This is, in essence, an Orthodox Mecca, since it is here that one of the four inheritances of the Mother of God and the famous Holy Trinity Seraphim-Diveevsky Monastery, associated with the life of the Monk Seraphim of Sarov, are located.

The village attracts travelers by the fact that it is there that the estate of A.S. Pushkin is located, which nowadays serves as a house-museum. An excursion to, founded in 1435, will also seem very entertaining. The original building itself has not survived to this day, but it was repeatedly restored and served first as a men's and then a women's monastery near the walls of which trade was brisk in the 19th century.

To book an excursion, contact the guide directly through the private messaging service or using the specified contact information.

What can you see in Nizhny Novgorod in 1 day? If you open the description of the city, you will see a huge list of attractions. What is more important and interesting? How to find the best route around the city? You can try to do it yourself, or you can entrust this work to specialists. For example, go to bus and walking tour of Nizhny Novgorod! It lasts three hours and is not that expensive - about 500 rubles. I myself have just returned from a similar city tour, so I am writing a review in hot pursuit.

How to buy a ticket for a sightseeing tour of Nizhny Novgorod

This can be done in several ways. For example, come to the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin (transport stop "Minin and Pozharsky Square"), enter the territory through the arch of the main Dmitrievskaya tower, immediately turn right and find yourself in the so-called Tourist Center of the Kremlin. Here you can select the date and time you want. If you're lucky, you can join a group that departs "in just 15 minutes".

But that's - if you're lucky. In summer, at the peak of the tourist season, or on weekends, you can easily hear a less encouraging answer: "for today all seats are occupied, come tomorrow." Of course, there is nothing fatal in the fact that you do not get on the tour, no. This is not the last place in a boat from a sinking ship. But, once we have outlined it, it will be a shame to get a "turn from the gate."

I myself used the Ultrakassa service. Just a few clicks of the mouse and the ticket for the required date and time was already crawling out of the printer. Comfortable. You know that you are guaranteed to get into the group, and on that day and hour that is convenient. And there is no need to travel in advance for a ticket. I invite you to follow my example. Here is the form with which you can buy a ticket for a sightseeing tour of Nizhny Novgorod.

The day before the start of the excursion, an employee of the company called me (it turns out that this is a common practice - they call everyone), made sure that I had not changed my mind and told me when and where to arrive. This concludes the preparatory part. It remains only to charge the camera battery, prepare a place on the memory card, show up the next day and join the organized crowd of tourists.

Before the excursion

Our route started right next to tourist center of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin:

Do you see where the arrow is directed and where the aunt is looking? You must arrive there and present your voucher (the one that got out of the printer). They don't ask anything else, although when buying a ticket I had to enter the series and passport number. I grabbed it, of course, just in case, but it remained in my bag. Not needed.

A wide trade in souvenirs is organized inside the tourist center. If you want to take with you some trinket in memory of Nizhny Novgorod, you can buy fridge magnets, mugs, plates, spoons, nesting dolls here. Even more souvenirs are sold in the arch of the Dmitrievskaya Tower. The main thing is not to be silly and not to buy something big and heavy before the start of the excursion. After all, then you have to carry this thing with you.

If you really like something, postpone the purchase until the end of the city tour. After all, at the end you will be brought back. To the same place. Then have some fun :)

And you can also dress up as a king or queen and take a picture on a self-made throne with a scepter and orb in hand. Most importantly, do not forget to put on a state expression. As a last resort - "knit your eyebrows", as the hero of one famous film used to say. Otherwise, your image will clearly lack something:

Aha! Here is one aunt has already decided to be imprinted in the centuries:

Alas, there is no time to follow the process. Our tour begins.

The beginning of the sightseeing tour of Nizhny Novgorod. Guide

Here I must make a lyrical digression and admit that in general I do not really like going with excursion groups. There are many reasons for this. For example, I get nervous when I don't hear the guide's speech. I get even more nervous when she sounds soothing. There are, you know, such talkers whose speech sounds monotonous, memorized. If you come across such an "art critic" as a guide - write "lost".

There are also those who cannot walk quickly and most of the time the group spends on slow, silent transitions from one place to another. You understand that there are only a few minutes left to listen and see the sights. Not to mention taking a good picture of them.

Seen enough of such "guides" in Peterhof. They waddle around, barely speak. Two or three people are still stoically straining their ears in the hope of hearing at least something besides the noise of fountains. Others have already resigned themselves and just walk as if by themselves.

Going to sightseeing tour of Nizhny Novgorod, I set myself up in advance - not to worry and not get upset if something goes wrong. Well, as a last resort, I'll just take a walk, look at the city, take a photo of something.

Probably, everything would have happened if it were not for Alice. That was the name of our guide. A pretty young girl with the right speech and, it seemed to me, a deep knowledge of the subject, immediately won over. No grimaces, words, jargon. Correct speech, excellent diction, ability to listen and answer questions clearly. In addition to this, she spoke into the microphone, so even moving slightly away from the group to take pictures, she could continue to listen to the story.

The guide had a folder in the hands of the guide, which she periodically looked into, but not in order to spy on some historical date or the name of this or that figure, but to show us illustrations of how, for example, the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin used to look like:

I don't know if all the guides are trained in the same way and have a similar manner of speaking, but I can give Alice a solid A for the job. If you get to her, consider yourself lucky.

Tour of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin

It would be strange if we started with something else. After all Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin- the main attraction and the most ancient city building. It was with him that our bus-walking tour began. First, we moved along the exhibition of military equipment located between the main Dmitrievskaya and Pantry towers. This open-air exhibition is open all year round. But, of course, it is better to visit it during the warm season.

The best time for viewing is in the afternoon, when the sun begins to decline. Then it will cover samples of military equipment that were produced at the enterprises of the city of Gorky (as Nizhny Novgorod was called in Soviet times) and the region during the war. By the time the excursion began, the exhibits were in the shadow of the fortress wall, so they did not turn out brilliantly in the photographs:

Three panels made in the technique seemed especially interesting to me. FrameUnite Art located in the arches of the Kremlin wall. These are the works of local photographer Igor Pshenitsyn. The triptych is called "Our Victory".

If you look at the panel from a distance, you can see the general large image:

Coming closer, you can see the individual elements of the overall picture. These are nothing more than portraits of front-line soldiers. Some of them are made against a light background, others are darker. Careful selection and relative positioning of the portraits made it possible to form the overall image:

Then we moved to the square between the administrative buildings. On the one hand, there is the Legislative Assembly, on the other, the Arbitration Court and a new building with vertical details on the facade, which, alas, completely stands out from the general architecture.

There is also a monument to the founder of Nizhny Novgorod, Georgy Vsevolodovich and his spiritual mentor, Saint Simon.

It is noteworthy that Michael the Archangel Cathedral- the only one that has survived on the territory of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin - is also the only one in Russia with a hipped-roof dome. The temple keeps tomb with the ashes of Kozma Minin... I hope you have heard about the Nizhny Novgorod militia and do not need the introduction of this national hero. It's just amazing, I passed this cathedral hundreds of times, and I only bothered to go in and see the tomb of Minin on the excursion! And before, I didn't even know that she was here! In short, darkness.

We were given only 5 minutes to visit the cathedral. Few, of course. It turned out just to go in and out. But when the tour is over, you can return here.

Observation deck of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin

Right next to the cathedral there is an eternal flame, an alley of memory and, of course, an observation deck. Being here, you begin to understand what the word "space" means.

Being at the very edge of the many-meter cliff, you will see the majestic confluence of two large rivers - the Oka and the Volga, the famous Strelka, which is sung in the famous song: "On the wide Volga, on the far Strelka".

Now the territory of the shooter is being refined in preparation for the 2018 football championship. Old buildings are being demolished, and a recreational zone is being built in their place and a new stadium is being erected.

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, into which we will still get today, is a real decoration of the landscape. We spent about 20 minutes here. The guide told us about how earlier there were no residential buildings across the river, but only the rows of the famous Nizhny Novgorod fair, and even then only in the warm season.

The position of the sun this time favored the shooting, so a number of successful photographs were taken. Alas, even the best of them still do not convey the atmosphere of this wonderful place. Nevertheless, I will venture to show them to you so that you get an impression of the views from the observation deck.

Having admired the views, we returned to the Dmitrievskaya tower, left the territory of the Kremlin and went to board the bus.

Other sights of Nizhny Novgorod

Gazelle NEXT acted as an excursion bus. Probably, it would not be very convenient to ride it on a long excursion, but for a three-hour walk around the city it would be fine. Well-tinted windows and air conditioning saved from the heat that prevailed on the day of the excursion.

First, we made a "circle of honor" around the central square of the city, looked at the monument to Kozma Minin and the fountain erected in memory of the old city water supply system. Imagine, before there were no pipes in city houses. Neither cold nor, moreover, hot water. If you need water, if you please put on your slippers, or rather sandals, and trudge with buckets to the fountain. How much you bring is all yours. And you also say that you live somehow badly! I would have looked at you if I had to go for water a few blocks away.

Then we turned onto Minin Street, looked out of the bus window at the preserved old merchant houses. We saw the buildings of several large universities. In particular, we drove past the Nizhny Novgorod State Technical University. In one of his courtyards there is a real ekranoplan... The fact is that the university bears the name of Rostislav Alekseev - the author of the idea of hydrofoils, ekranoplanes and other technical miracles.

On Sennaya Square, we turned left and began a picturesque descent along the Kazan exit. Perhaps you know that Nizhny Novgorod is partly on the mountain, partly down by the river. The height difference reaches 120 meters in some places. Therefore, there are many streets in the city along which you can go down and, accordingly, go up. They are called congresses.

Some of them are of natural origin. For example, the former ravines. Others are artificially created. It's even scary to say, but 30,000 people went to work every day to organize one of the congresses - Pokhvalinsky! These were mainly prisoners and soldiers.

During a sightseeing tour of the city, of course, this will not be possible. Just take a note. Moreover, a very beautiful panorama opens up from the upper observation deck, which would be a shame not to see. So, when the city tour ends and the bus brings you back to the Kremlin, do not forget to immediately walk to the Chkalovskaya Stairs.

And finally, the last interesting information. Every year in the spring, there are stair races from the bottom up. Anyone can take part at their own peril and risk. The winner gets a decent prize. Every year it is different, but quite often the winner was handed the keys to a brand new Volga car. So, if you need a Volga, don't miss your chance. Exercise.

While at the bottom of the Chkalovskaya staircase, we were unable to take normal photographs of it. The reason is the sun, which was beating directly into the lens. All attempts by members of the group to make their own portrait against the background of one of the most important sights of Nizhny Novgorod suffered a fiasco. The situation could have been saved only by a forced outbreak. But not everyone knew about this, and I did not bother with my advice.

In addition to the staircase itself, in this part of the embankment, you can see the Boat Hero. This is a real ship, not a dummy. He took part in the defense of Stalingrad. There is also a creation by a Hungarian sculptor. Deer- the symbol of the city. From a distance it looks quite normal. But on closer inspection, you will notice that the sculpture consists of sharp strips of metal.

Probably this was done so that those who like to take selfies do not climb on the deer. And the truth is - I would not climb. There is even a warning sign next to the sculpture. Do not climb, otherwise leave a piece of clothing or bacon there. It's as lucky as anyone.

In addition to man-made sights, here you can admire the vastness of the Volga expanses. Unfortunately, very few pleasure boats now go along the Volga. But I still remember the times when here in the roadstead there were several beautiful white motor ships, and high-speed hydrofoils - rockets, comets, glided along the water surface. Who knows, maybe with time it will all come back.

I suggest you take a look at a few photos taken at the Chkalovskaya stairs:

If you wish, you can see photos of this place and other attractions of Nizhny Novgorod on my website dedicated to photography: (opens in a separate window)

The walk along the embankment took only 10 minutes. It is clear that in such a short time it is impossible to fully enjoy the views, breathe in the fresh river air and take good photographs. The purpose of the tour is simply to show you interesting places. Then you can come or come here on your own and stay here as long as you want.

In the meantime, we are loading onto the bus and going to see the next attraction of Nizhny Novgorod.

Christmas (Stroganov) Church

In fact, it is called the Church of the Cathedral of the Most Holy Theotokos. But the money for its construction was given by the Nizhny Novgorod merchant Stroganov, and it is located on Rozhdestvenskaya Street. So they call her either Rozhdestvenskaya or Stroganovskaya.

Parking for cars on Rozhdestvenskaya Street is paid, and trucks and buses are generally prohibited. Therefore, our bus stopped at the Nizhne-Volzhskaya embankment almost immediately behind the building of the river station. In the doorway of the houses we saw a church. Even with a fleeting glance from a distance, it seemed to us very unusual and beautiful:

To get to the church, I had to cross the road and climb a small alley. Up close, the structure looks fundamental - not as toy-like as from afar. Intricate rich stone carving, beautiful multi-colored domes allow the church to claim the title of the most beautiful temple in Nizhny Novgorod.

The guide said that the place where the church was built abounds in groundwater. It has always been that way. Therefore, to protect the building, an underground network was built to drain the groundwater into the river. To this day, you can see large metal gratings in the pavements, under which you can hear the roar of the water element. Not just some streams, but real underground rivers raging in the bowels of the mountain. Day after day, year after year, for several centuries, water has been directed through safe channels to prevent soil erosion.

Nevertheless, apparently, not everything is going as smoothly as we would like. This is evidenced by significant cracks in stone structures:

It is known that in 1860, due to subsidence of the ground, the bell tower of the temple gave a noticeable tilt. It deviated from the vertical by 1.2 meters and could collapse at any minute. To save the bell tower, the foundation and part of the upper tiers had to be changed. Then there was no modern construction equipment, so the work was done by hand with great care.

This struggle between good and evil has been going on here for more than one century. Who will win? We hope that, nevertheless, good.

To get to the temple, I had to do part of the way, climbing up a rather steep slope. The cars going up here roar like buffalo with their engines. It’s even scary to imagine how dangerous it becomes here in winter in the ice.

The group stretched out somewhat. Some overcame the rise rather quickly and had the opportunity to better see the stucco molding on the facade of the church. Others walked with stops, but still reached the cherished line.

Inside, the church turned out to be unexpectedly small. Not surprising. It stretches high up, but occupies a relatively small area. Unfortunately, it was forbidden to photograph the interior. It's a pity - there is a beautiful carved altar there. They say that during the Soviet era, it was closed with a false wall to save it from destruction.

Outside, the church is much more convenient to photograph from the mountain. You can go up the road or stairs and take pictures like this:

See the clock at the top of the bell tower? Interesting fact. They are completely mechanical and require winding up every two weeks.

Alas, the whole church, together with the bell tower, did not fit into the frame. To get a general view, you have to shoot from an even higher vantage point. For example, from the Fedorovsky embankment.

But, by slightly moving the camera zoom, you can grab individual design elements. They really look very nice:

This concludes our acquaintance with the Nativity Church. Our next destination is Alexander Nevsky Cathedral on the Arrow.

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral on the Strelka

The guide told us in detail about this grandiose structure. Unfortunately, little was remembered. Here are just some of the details that remain in memory.

The height of the cathedral is 87 meters. For comparison. An ordinary 9-storey Brezhnev building has a height of 28 meters. Put three nine-story buildings on top of each other and you will get an idea of how grandiose the cathedral is.

The interior of the cathedral can simultaneously accommodate up to 1000 parishioners.

For the initial construction, 454 thousand rubles and kopecks were spent. All of these funds were collected from donations over 10 years by 1866. The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral was under construction for 13 years and was completely finished by 1881.

It is noteworthy that the church did not have a permanent parish. Its parishioners were merchants who came to trade at the Nizhny Novgorod fair. The latter, as you know, functioned only in the warm season. In winter, the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral was closed and was not even heated.

In Soviet times, a project was developed for the demolition of the cathedral and the construction of a lighthouse in its place with a monument to V.I. Lenin. Fortunately, the project was not fully implemented. The only thing that we managed to do was to disassemble the tent domes. It happened in 1930.

Over time, all kinds of additional buildings were added to the temple, gradually changing it beyond recognition. There were warehouses, various offices and even living quarters. In 1940, a fire broke out in the building. As a result, the entire interior painting was lost.

During the Great Patriotic War, an anti-aircraft battery was installed on the main drum of the temple to protect the city from enemy air raids.

Currently, the cathedral is working again. In 2009 he was given the status of a cathedral.

On the territory of the cathedral there is a bell - the third largest in Russia. Its diameter and height are the same and equal to 4 meters. Weight - 60 tons. This is about the same as the weight of a railway tank car filled with some petroleum product.

The bell was cast at the Baltic plant and lasted for several hours. It took 3 weeks for the finished bell to cool down.

As a resident of Nizhny Novgorod, I must admit that I had never been to the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral before. Although it is clearly visible from many parts of the city, it is located a little off the road. To go to the cathedral, it was necessary to specially allocate time for this, but, as is usually the case, there is no time at all.

It was only on a sightseeing tour of Nizhny that I got the opportunity to look at the cathedral from the inside. What can you say? Even on the way to the temple, you begin to feel like an insignificant insect. The impression is "aggravated" by the fact that around the cathedral there was not a single building higher than 3 floors. And now they have been demolished, as the territory is being improved for the World Cup.

And when you enter the cathedral ... The only place where I experienced the same feeling was the St. Nicholas Naval Cathedral in Kronstadt. Greatness is the most appropriate word to describe an impression.

It is definitely worth a visit there. Of course, I will show my photos. As best I could, I tried to convey the atmosphere and spirit of the cathedral in them. But in comparison with reality, they look as pitiful and defective as I myself do in comparison with the Cathedral of Alexander Nevsky.

We were given about 20 minutes to explore this attraction. It will probably be superfluous to say that this is very little. Nevertheless, some members of the group managed, among other things, to visit the toilet and buy some pies in a stall on the territory of the cathedral in the allotted time.

The last attraction remained in line:

Assumption Church on the Fedorovsky embankment

The bus again carried us over the bridge across the Oka, then we climbed the mountain along the Pokhvalinsky exit, squeezed through the congestion on Ilyinskaya street, full of old two-story houses, and finally arrived at the last point of the route. Here, on one "patch" you can see two historical buildings at once. Actually Assumption Church and house of Afanasy Olesov(stress on the first syllable).

Afanasy Olesov, as the guide told us, was not a merchant or industrialist. It was a tax collector. In the old days, the tax system was slightly different than it is today. It was necessary to collect and hand over to the treasury a certain amount. If you collect more, you can keep the surplus for yourself. If less - be so kind to make up for the missing from your own pocket. A sort of UTII sample of the century before last.

Afanasy Olesov was more than a successful tax collector. It is not surprising that he had enough funds to buy land in this beautiful place and build such luxurious chambers for himself (I have not been inside, but even looking outside you can get some idea of the interior decoration).

Noticing the successful actions of the official, the tsar sent him to the Astrakhan region, where there was a real trouble with the collection of taxes. Realizing that you can pay with your head for your "successful" actions in a new place, Athanasius promises to build a church if he returns safe and sound.

This is how the Assumption Church appeared in the immediate vicinity of Olesov's house. Then, already during the Soviet era, a high-rise building appeared next to it, which greatly spoiled the view. The church itself was partially destroyed and rebuilt only in the 90s of the last century.

If you climb to the balcony of the upper floor of a residential building, you can see the Assumption Church, the house of Afanasy Olesov and many more interesting things, including the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin from a completely unexpected angle. Even in my archive, I found a photo of the Assumption Church during the restoration. If interesting, .

Then we proceeded to the observation deck of the Fedorovsky embankment. The weather that day was favorable for shooting, so we got interesting colorful photos:

I would like to comment on the last photo. If you look closely, there is a pile of ruins to the right of the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. Port warehouses used to stand on this site. Inside there were openwork metal structures, as if they were even protected by the state as a monument of engineering art.

Alas, just a week before the excursion, the historical warehouses were demolished. Instead of all the buildings on Strelka, they are going to arrange a huge recreational zone. Earlier, before the demolition of warehouses, Strelka looked like this: photo. I didn't even think that these photos would become historical so quickly.

The last observation deck made a special impression on the guests of the city. Not every city has two large rivers at once, their confluence, such a difference in elevation. And then the weather was as ordered. In short, a combination of successful factors, plus the professionalism of the guide did their job.

Output

In my opinion, the city tour was quite a success. Now it is already clear that three hours is not so little at all, if the route should be properly planned. We visited many interesting places, looked at the sights of Nizhny Novgorod. Of course, all this can be seen in the pictures, but if you walk the streets yourself, listen to the guide, see historical places with your own eyes, there will be much more impressions.

After such an excursion, you will no longer say the usual phrase: "Yes, I have not seen the city itself." Moreover, now you will know where else you can go and where to spend your free time, if any.

I hope I didn't tire you too much with my story. You probably already noticed that in the text there were many links to my other site, where I publish photographs of the city, old buildings, temples and other interesting things. Thus, I decided to slightly expand the boundaries of our excursion to show photographs of the places that were mentioned in the reports, and which could not be photographed from the bus.

On this, let me take my leave. If you yourself decide to go on a sightseeing tour of Nizhny, I wish you a successful trip, good weather and decent companions :).

We have chosen the excursion program "Mysticism and History of Nizhny Novgorod" for our friends, a married couple from Alaska. The difficulty of the choice was that the husband did not understand a word in Russian, and the wife spoke very poorly in English. Moreover, we were limited in time. Therefore, when they applied for an excursion, they were ready to refuse. To our surprise, the guide found the optimal conditions for us in just 15 minutes. Our guests are very happy! I want to express my deep gratitude to Pavel for an interesting excursion, as well as an individual non-standard approach to business!

Thanks to Svetlana for the excursion! We walked along the entire Rozhdestvenskaya street and Svetlana told about almost every house. At home, everything has a history, it is clear that Svetlana herself is very interested in this topic, because she constantly finds new facts in the archives. It is very interesting to read archival information (copies, of course). Enjoyed it, I definitely recommend it!

Shrovetide is one of the most beloved and hearty folk holidays. It is associated with the beginning of spring and the abundance of ruddy pancakes on the table. Shrovetide has no fixed date and is celebrated 7 weeks before Easter, falling in the second half of February or the first days of March. This cheerful holiday is celebrated for a whole week, but not all pancake lovers know the history of the origin of Maslenitsa festivities.
