The Icebreaker Festival 2018 in St. Petersburg will be special. After all, it is the fifth anniversary. For this occasion we came up with a special program.

CAPITAL OF THE ARCTIC

The festival will take place in the Northern capital for two days - April 29 and 30. How St. Petersburg turned into an Arctic center, what can be seen on the largest operating icebreakers in the city and where is the most convenient place to watch the “Icebreaker Parade”, the organizers of the event told - for this they came to the press center of “Komsomolskaya Pravda in St. Petersburg”.

– Under our management, two large linear icebreakers will participate in the Festival - “St. Petersburg” and “Novorossiysk”, as well as the port icebreaker “Ivan Kruzenshtern”, the auxiliary icebreaker “Mudyug” and the icebreaker “Nevskaya Zastava”, built specifically for work in the Northern waters capital, says Deputy Director for Maritime Safety of the North-Western Basin Branch of Rosmorport Andrey Balashov.

According to him, the icebreaker parade is a kind of completion of winter navigation.

This event is very important to us because it promotes the hard work of icebreaker sailors and creates images of heroes. This is true,” Andrei Balashov is sure.

The specialist claims that St. Petersburg is the capital of the Arctic because our icebreakers operate all year round, including in the Arctic regions.

By the way, one of our small icebreakers, “Captain Zarubin,” helped in the construction of the Kerch Bridge. Now it opens up navigation on inland waterways and is in great demand,” added Andrey Balashov.

The idea of holding an icebreaker festival in the Northern capital arose in 2014. The event, dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Russian icebreaker fleet, aroused enormous interest among St. Petersburg residents and tourists. This prompted the organizers to take the next step: making the festival an annual event.
A unique holiday, centered on powerful ships that crush ice and support navigation in freezing water basins, attracts thousands of tourists. In 2019, the icebreaker festival in St. Petersburg will start for the sixth time, the opening date is scheduled for May 4th. The Lieutenant Schmidt and Angliyskaya embankments are being turned into observation and festival platforms. This is the best place to watch this unusual spectacle.

Icebreaker Festival in St. Petersburg 2019: festival program

Festival days provide a unique opportunity:

  • see the icebreaker parade;
  • visit the decks of Arctic ships;
  • watch the spectacle of waltzing tugs and light show.

According to established tradition, the event will be opened by a parade of icebreaking ships. Arctic giants will sail solemnly, greeting St. Petersburg residents and guests of the city. An integral part of the festival program is sightseeing tours on icebreakers. Those interested will be invited to climb onto the open decks of operating ships, experience the realities of naval life, and learn more about polar professions.
Concert performances, thematic lectures, film screenings, competitions, and quests will be held at coastal venues.
The tugboat waltz, which has firmly become part of the annual program, arouses keen interest among spectators. This spectacle takes place in the waters of the Big Neva. River tugs rotate synchronously on the water like toy boats, rearrange themselves, circle in pairs, form a figure in the shape of a four-leaf flower, and then move apart again. With the help of fire extinguishing devices installed on tugboats, jets of water fly into the air, creating dancing fountains in the middle of the water surface. This action cannot be retold, it must be seen and enjoyed. In the evening, when the city falls into twilight, cheerfully illuminated embankments and light shows will create a festive atmosphere.
