Instructions

The fastest way to get from Moscow to Baku is by plane. There are quite a lot of flights between the capitals of Russia and Azerbaijan. Every day, airliners of Aeroflot, UTair and Azerbaijan Airlines take off from the Moscow airports Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo and Vnukovo. The flight time to Heydar Aliyev Airport is 3 hours 10 minutes. As for a visa, Russian citizens in Azerbaijan do not need one - there is a visa-free regime between the two countries.

If you get to Baku by long-distance train, then Moscow-Baku trains depart from Kursky Station twice a week. Travel time is approximately 35 hours. Well, a significant disadvantage of traveling by train is that the carriages are not the newest and the conditions are far from being the most comfortable, even in the compartment.

There are fans of traveling from Moscow to Baku by car. There are few of them, but they still exist. Such travelers need to remember that the road will go through the territory of Georgia and Armenia. And if Russian citizens do not need a visa to Armenia, then in Georgia they will definitely have to pay for a transit visa. This is done right on the Russian-Georgian border, so it is necessary to have a foreign passport with you. You must first move along the M-4 Don highway through Tula, Voronezh, Rostov-on-Don, Stavropol and Nalchik. Then take the R-217 Caucasus highway to get to the Russian-Georgian border and then drive along the E-117 highway. After passing the Georgian-Armenian border, the M-27 highway will begin, along which you can get to the Armenian-Azerbaijani border. After this there will be the A322 highway, which will lead directly to Baku. The journey will take approximately 38 hours.

Baku railway station (Baku-Pasazhirskaya station) is the largest railway junction in Azerbaijan, focused on long-distance trains.

Historically, the station area is a “mixture” of several buildings. The beautiful old station, built in oriental style by 1880 and then called Tiflis, is now left as an architectural monument. The Sabunchinsky station building, opened here in 1926 in connection with the electrification of the railway, was obsolete by 1976. It was decided to move the electric trains to another station, and the building was completely reconstructed and a new, Baku station, was erected.

Now the Baku station is an ultra-modern transport complex. In addition to the usual railway infrastructure (24-hour ticket offices, waiting rooms, sanitary rooms, storage rooms, a medical aid station, etc.), here you can find many cafes and restaurants, ATMs and currency exchangers, boutiques, a soft play corner for children, a post office and even the telegraph. The huge interior space of the station is connected by modern elevators and escalators. Free Wi-Fi internet is available throughout the entire territory.

Suburban transportation within Baku and nearby settlements is carried out from the Boyuk-Shor station.

Buy a ticket from Baku railway station

You can buy tickets at Baku station 24 hours a day. Please note that there is an electronic queue system: at the approach to the ticket office there are machines where you can immediately set the direction where you want to purchase tickets and receive a coupon with your queue number. Each ticket office sells tickets only for a specific destination. If you have any questions, the station staff are ready to help. However, from the experience of those who have been here, most of the station staff speak only their native language, understanding neither Russian nor English.

At the ticket office you can pay with a bank card, but if you pay in cash, keep in mind that only dollars and euros can be exchanged at the station; rubles can be exchanged in the city.

To avoid such problems and the associated stress, it makes sense to buy tickets online using a convenient system - Russian Railways website or the Tutu.ru portal.

Main directions

Trains from Baku station depart to Russia, Georgia and Ukraine, as well as within the country. If you have a transfer to Baku, you can spend this time at the station. Its building is designed in a very unusual way: on the side of the station square it is two-story, on the platform side it is one-story. The waiting rooms are designed as a kind of individual compartments, where it is very convenient to relax while waiting for your train. Once upon a time, the Baku station was “famous” for its thieves and outcasts, but now this problem has been solved - cleanliness, order and security are maintained by video surveillance and police squads.

Azerbaijan Railways CJSC (Azerbaycan Demir Yollari, Azerbaijan Railways) was established in 2009 on the basis of the Azerbaijan Railway. The subsidiary CJSC Nakhichevan Railway serves a section of the road in the autonomous republic of the same name. The national railway operator has 100% state capital. In 2015, a new stage of development began. Until 2022, they plan to invest $5 billion in the reconstruction, electrification and creation of modern infrastructure. A complete renewal of the rolling stock (freight, passenger, locomotive) will be carried out.

Azerbaijan is actively integrating into the international economic community, which requires the active development of communication routes. The Baku-Tbilisi-Kars highway has been launched, and trains to Istanbul will begin running in 2018. The North-South project is being implemented, which will connect Iran, the Russian Federation and Northern Europe. The TRACECA transport corridor will connect Europe, the Caucasus and Asia.

The railway came to Azerbaijan in 1880. Its history is directly related to the development of oil production. The first section from Baku to Sumgayit was only 20 km long. Today, the total length of railway tracks is 2910 km, 1241 of them are electrified. 802 km of roads are double track. There are 176 stations (including freight stations).

Suburban rail service

Due to the low profitability of transportation, commuter trains are not very common throughout the country. Local residents mainly use personal transport, buses and taxis. Active suburban traffic remained on the Baku-Yalama section and near Ganja. All days (except Saturday) the Baku-Shirvan-Hajikabul train runs. The electric trains used are ER2, made during the Soviet era. The most expensive ticket for a commuter train costs 18 manats*.

Note! Suburban trains to Baku depart not from the central station, but from other stations within the city (Kishly, Khirdalan, Khatai, Bilejari).

Since August 11, 2009, the movement of commuter trains on the Absheron Peninsula has been reduced to a minimum. Some of the tracks were dismantled and the structures were demolished. At the beginning of 2018, a large-scale reconstruction of the Baku Suburban Railway (length 107 km) began, which is planned to be completed by September.

Note! Due to construction work, the commuter train schedule often changes.

Modernization will improve the connection of the city center with Sumgait and the villages of Subanchi, Zabrat, Pirmagi, Goradil, Saray, Kurdakhani. The intensity and speed of train traffic will increase.

International passenger traffic

CJSC "AZD" connects Azerbaijan with the Russian Federation, Ukraine, Turkey and Georgia, Iran will soon be added. There are 3 international routes along which Azerbaijani trains operate:

On October 30, 2017, the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway line (in the future Istanbul) was officially opened.

Stadler Rail Group vehicles reach a speed of 160 km/h and move on tracks of different widths (equipped with sliding wheels). 30 carriages of 1st class (double compartments with shower and toilet), 2nd class (four-berth compartments and compartments for disabled people), and dining cars were purchased. The train is capable of being on autonomous power for 24 hours in the event of a locomotive breakdown. The journey will take 18 hours.

Note! The movement of passenger trains on the route Baku - Tbilisi - Kars will begin in September 2018.

The nearest plans include the launch of electric trains between Dagestan and Azerbaijan. And the construction of a railway to the Shahdag ski resort in the Gusar region in order to increase the tourist flow from Russia.

Domestic passenger service

On domestic routes there are branded (two-digit numbering) and passenger (three-digit numbering) trains:

  • No. 98/97. Baku - Gazakh;
  • No. 656/655. Baku - Belaken;
  • No. 660/659. Baku - Horadiz;

The trains are made up of compartment and reserved seat carriages. Seated carriages are not used even on short routes.

Luxury Express trains to Mingachevir and Astara have been canceled due to unprofitability. Only Express 607/608 runs from Baku to Ganja.

Additional services on trains

Traveling on a branded train allows you to choose the type of food, receive a hygiene kit and newspapers.

All carriages are no older than 12 years old and are equipped with modern air conditioning equipment and dry closets. The conductors were trained according to special programs. The upper seats are covered, with the exception of the upper side reserved seats. The dining car offers an expanded range of dishes. The presence of a TV depends on the car model. Slippers are provided, but are not always provided. Trains run on a more convenient schedule for passengers. Luxury cars will run on the route Baku - Tbilisi - Kars.

Note! On the trains of JSC "AZD" it is permissible to transport small pets or one large dog (only in a compartment in case of full purchase).

Express carriages have free wi-fi, a coffee machine (not always), air conditioning and dry toilets. Disposable slippers are always provided in SV carriages. The presence of a safe, TV and shower depends on the version of the carriage. Passengers of any carriages en route can use the services of a dining car, if available (on domestic routes it is extremely rare) and purchase the latest newspapers, drinks, tea and confectionery products, and souvenirs from the conductors.

If the card details are not provided within 3 minutes, the whole process will have to start again. After payment, the ticket is sent by email. Before departure, you must present it at the station ticket office at least one hour before departure.

Note! Children under 5 years old travel free of charge if they do not occupy a separate seat.

The cost of a child ticket is 50% of the cost of a standard ticket. For all tickets more than 4 manats*, purchased more than 5 days before departure, there is a discount of 1 manats*.

There are a huge number of negative reviews from travelers about the trains of AZD JSC on the Internet. They relate to old rolling stock, non-working air conditioners, attempts by conductors to charge for services included in the ticket price, and windows closed in the heat. But in recent years the situation has changed radically. In addition to technical modernization, much attention is paid to improving the professional qualities of train crews. Azerbaijan Railways has set itself the goal of providing passengers with safety and high quality services at affordable prices in the near future.
