The largest ship. How the largest cruise ship in the world works

Until today, I considered the largest ship or for example

As time goes on, technology develops. It so happened that container ships and supertankers gained the reputation of being the largest ships. But much less visible ships, designed to perform technical and production work, have long surpassed them in these parameters. And depending on the goals set, they become larger and larger.

The new record holder Pioneering Spirit, owned by a Swiss company, was launched - a giant construction and installation catamaran that has no analogues in modern shipbuilding.

Let's take a closer look at how and why this wave lord, whose width exceeds its length, was built football field.

Pioneer is a ship gigantic size. Reaching 124 meters wide and 382 meters long, its parameters are equal to the famous Empire State Building, and its width exceeds the length of a football field. The carrying capacity is high even for ships of the same type - 48 thousand tons. The cost of the project is also a record high and amounts to almost $3 billion.

Unlike oil tankers or container ships, crane ships specialize in transporting multi-ton cargo and take part in offshore construction. This vessel will be used to install oil and gas platforms.

Photo 4.

The customer of the world's largest crane vessel is Allseas, which is not going to stop there: the next ship they build will be 160 meters wide and 400 meters long. The new vessel will be put into operation no later than 2020. The construction of giants is carried out at shipyards in South Korea.

Built in the docks of South Korea, the Pathfinder was sent to Rotterdam for final development and launching. From the Maasflakte 2 area, where a special dry dock was built for the new ship, the giant offshore crane will depart for Cape Town and then on its first mission.

The catamaran is maintained by a team of 571 people, including sailors, engineers, specialists in lifting and installing offshore drilling platforms and support staff.

Photo 6.

The world's largest ship cost its owners Allseas Corporation $1.7 billion, and the project was designed by Finnish shipbuilders Deltamarin. The contract for the creation of a giant vessel by the Allseas Corporation was signed in June 2010, after which the development of design and technical documentation began and the laying of the huge ship in South Korea at the Daewoo Shipbuilding Marine Engineering shipyard began. In 2013, the world's largest ship, the Pieter Schelte, was launched.

Photo 7.

Thanks to the use of a catamaran-type hull, the dimensions of the newest vessel turned out to be impressive: maximum length 382 m, width 117 m. This design made it possible to place its own infrastructure on the deck of the floating city, as well as the ability to transport a small oil platform.

The vessel's power plant includes eight diesel engines with a capacity of 15,640 hp. and thirteen Rolls-Royse diesel generators with a total capacity of 97,000 hp.

It is noteworthy that the ship was originally named after Pieter Schelte Heerem - marine engineer, the father of the founder of Allseas, and, part-time, a Nazi criminal. During World War II, Pieter Schelte served in the Waffen-SS, and after the war ended, a Dutch court sentenced Heerem to three years in prison for war crimes. At the end of last year, the provocative name was changed, and the ship became the Pioneer.

The largest ship in the world is equipped with three deck cranes with a lifting capacity of 50 tons and one with a lifting capacity of 600 tons. The diameter of the pipes being laid ranges from 2 to 68 inches, and a special cargo compartment can accommodate pipes with a total weight of 27 thousand tons.

The world's largest vessel is equipped with a state-of-the-art dynamic positioning system and is designed for the transport, installation and commissioning of drilling platforms. The maximum carrying capacity of the world's widest vessel is 48 thousand tons. To do this, it was equipped with a unique 65-meter-high keel system, manufactured to special order in Italy.

Photo 9.

The owners have high hopes for the newest vessel, and are confident that it will break all records for depth and speed of pipe laying, for this it has all the necessary equipment. In particular, seven automatic welding stations and six stations for applying a protective layer to pipes will be installed along the entire length of the world's largest ship. It is also already known that Allseas intends to order a second multifunctional vessel, which will be larger than its predecessor. The world's largest ship is scheduled to be put into operation in 2020, and its main purpose will be the installation and dismantling of the largest oil and gas platforms.

The term “displacement of ships” comes up quite often. And although it is intuitively clear what it means, some people still do not fully understand what this important parameter means. Let's look at it.

What does a ship's displacement mean?

This parameter determines the volume of water displaced by the ship. The weight of water that a ship displaces is usually equal to the weight of the ship itself. Therefore, this parameter is expressed in tons, and not in volume. However, in the West it is customary to indicate this parameter in poods (which is also a weight unit). One ton is equal to 62.03 pounds. Therefore, if this parameter is equal to 10,000 tons, then this means that its weight is 620,300 pounds.

It is worth noting that the displacement of ships is a variable unit. It is always changing. A loaded ship traveling to one point will have the same weight; after unloading, its displacement becomes smaller. This also applies to fuel, which is consumed as the ship moves forward. So a ship leaves point “A” with one displacement and arrives at point “B” with another. Therefore, it cannot be said that the displacement of ships determines the weight of the ship, although this is only partly accurate. This parameter indicates exactly how much water is displaced per this moment. After all, even when one person comes on board, the displacement increases by 0.06-0.07 tons (the weight of one person).

Displacement of large ships

There are a lot of ships in the world with different weights of displaced water. But which ships are the leaders in this parameter? The size of some ships is simply amazing. And although some of the ships no longer sail, they still deserve attention as the largest and heaviest.

1st place - Prelude FLNG

The largest ship was built in 2013 in South Korea. It is 488 meters long and 78 meters wide. It is intended for gas transportation. 260 thousand tons of steel were used for its construction, and at full load the displacement is 600 thousand tons.

To make it easier to imagine the size and weight of this vessel, we can compare the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise. This ship can carry up to 90 aircraft and helicopters, and on board it uses 8 nuclear reactors, 4 turbines. It also serves 4,800 people. And its maximum displacement is 93,400 tons, which is approximately 6 times less than the Prelude FLNG.

2nd place - Seawise Giant

This supertanker was built in 1979 and has been known by many names. In particular, it is called the queen of oceans and rivers. This Japanese ship was heavily damaged during the Iran-Iraq War. It was considered impossible to repair it, so the decision was made to flood it. However, it was then raised from the bottom, repaired and named Happy Giant. In 2009 it made its last trip. Her displacement was 657,018 when fully loaded.

3rd place - Pierre Guillaumat

Third place is rightly taken by Pierre Guillaumat. It was named after the French politician and founder of Elf Aquitaine, Pierre Guillaume. It was built in 1977, served for six years, and then was scrapped due to unprofitability. It turned out that the ship, due to its size, could not pass through the Panama or Suez Canal, and also did not have the opportunity to enter many ports of the world. Consequently, its use was severely limited and sometimes it was irrational to drive it halfway around the world, bypassing the Panama or Suez Canal.

And although the ship turned out to be unprofitable and simply unsuccessful, it had a huge carrying capacity, and the vessel’s displacement reached 555 thousand tons.

4th place - Batillus

This supertanker was built by Chantiers de l’Atlantique for the famous oil industry corporation Shell Oil. Its carrying capacity was 554 thousand tons, speed - 16-17 knots. It rightly ranks fourth, but has not been used since 1985.

5th place - Esso Atlantic

In the history of ships, the name Esso Atlantic is one of the most popular. The length of the vessel was 406 meters, the carrying capacity was 516,891 tons. The ship served for 35 years as an oil tanker, but was scrapped in Pakistan in 2002.

6th place - Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller

The famous company Maersk has created one of the world's largest container ships, the Mc-Kinney Moller, which boasts the largest carrying capacity among container ships. Its length was 399 meters. Given its dimensions, the ship turned out to be quite fast - its speed was 23 knots. The ship was built at the South Korean plant Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering.

7th place - Emma Maersk

Once again, Maersk stood out by creating one of the. This vessel is still in operation (it was launched quite recently - in 2006). Its capacity is 11 thousand containers (11,000 TEU), and its length reaches 397 meters.

Finally

And although these ships are the largest today, this is only for a while. Technologies are improving, and in the near future we will be able to see new, more spacious ships. It is also worth noting that the above vessels are leaders in terms of displacement, but they are not the largest. After all, the dimensions of a ship do not indicate its weight and ability to transport large loads.

So, we have defined the displacement of the vessel. The main thing here is to understand that this parameter is not constant, it changes during loading, unloading, and fuel combustion.

People are always interested in what is superior to other similar objects in their strength, size, qualities, etc. This is why it exists, to celebrate the most outstanding objects, phenomena, people, etc.

1. Today, Knock Nevis is the largest ship in the world.

This tanker is designed to transport fuel.

Its length is almost 459 m and its width is 24 m.
The vessel's displacement is 565 thousand tons.

The ship was originally built for a Greek customer. But he didn't receive it.

After that, it was bought at auction by a Hong Kong company.

But in 1991 it was sold again; the new owner purchased it for $39 million.

This supertanker is included in the Guinness Book of Records.

With its impressive parameters, the vessel looks really powerful, and it is also painted in a spectacular red color.

2. The largest cruise ship is considered to be “Allure of the Seas"(charm of the seas).

It was put into operation in 2010 and is still in operation today.

The average cost of such airliners is from 500 to 800 million dollars

Its dimensions: length - 362 m, width - 66 m, height - 72 m. displacement - 225 thousand tons.

The liner has 17 decks, about 2,700 cabins, which can accommodate about 6,400 passengers.

By the way, he has a twin brother “Oasis”, who is only 5 cm smaller than him, but in terms of characteristics they are the same.

It is a city in the middle of the ocean with everything you need for a great luxury vacation.

There are boutiques, restaurants, theaters, swimming pools (see:), cinemas and solariums.

There are VIP cabins with a total area of 50 to 150 square meters. m.

3. This is not the best big airliner, but unlike the previous ones, it is very famous - “Queen Mary 2”.

It was built in France in 2003 and at that time was the largest cruise ship in the world, the dimensions of which are as follows: length - 345 meters, width - 41, height - 71 m. Capacity 2600 people

The ship also has all kinds of recreational facilities, personal care, shops, a library, a ballroom, a planetarium, 4, etc.

The ship was named after the liner "Queen Mary", which received its name in honor of the wife of the English King George 5 - Mary of Teck.

"Queen Mary" became the most big liner who traveled around the world.

This happened in 2007. The cruise, which started and ended in the port of Fort Lauderdale (Florida), lasted 81 days.

Size comparison with: man, bus, plane and Titanic.

4. Disney Dream Cruise Ship , the length of which is 340 m. Capacity 3950 people

5. — length 333 meters.

6. Norwegian Epic — length 325.5 meters

7. - length 317 m.

8. — 311 m. Capacity about 3500 passengers

9. — 306 meters

10. Princess Diamond — 290 m. Passenger capacity 2600 people

These were the most big ships worlds that are beautiful not only on the outside, but also on the inside.

But time will tell what kind of ships will be sailing the seas and oceans in 10-20 years.

Winners' names

Knock Nevis is the largest cargo ship in existence in the world. With a length of 466 and a width of 70 meters, its total cargo capacity is about 565 thousand tons (4.1 million barrels of oil). Of the cargo ships currently operating, the largest is Emma Maersk.

Norwegian super tanker Knock Nevis was built in 1979 and had the following names: Seawise Giant, Happy Giant, Jahre Viking. Its draft in the water when fully loaded is 24.5 m, which does not allow the ship to pass through the English Channel, Suez or Panama Canal.

A little history

This ship was built in the 20th century by the company SUMITOMO OPPAMA SHIPYARD (Japan). Despite the fact that this ship was laid down in 1979, its dimensions remain unsurpassed to this day.

Knock Nevis is also the largest displacement ship in human history. Its crew consists of 40 people, speed - no more than 13 knots. The braking distance itself big ship in the world is more than 10 km.

Seawise Giant began to be built by order of a Greek tycoon, but he went bankrupt as a result of the oil embargo of the 70s. After which the ship was purchased by the Hong Kong tycoon Tung, who financed its completion. However, at Tung's insistence, the ship's deadweight was increased from 480,000 to 564,763 tons, making the Seawise Giant the world's largest ship.

Destiny - to carry oil

The tanker entered service in 1981, and initially transported oil from the Gulf of Mexico fields. Then he was transferred to transport oil from Iran. Exactly at Persian Gulf he was sunk. In 1986, during the Iran-Iraq War, in the Strait of Hormuz, the tanker was attacked and sunk by Iraqi Air Force aircraft with missiles. She sank in shallow waters off Kharg Island, prompting her to be raised and taken to Keppel Shipyard in Singapore in August 1988 by her new owner, Norman International. Most likely, the company bought, raised and repaired the tanker mainly for prestige purposes. The refurbished Seawise Giant was renamed Happy Giant.

By 1999, he again changed his owner and name - he was bought by the Norwegian Jahare Wallem and renamed Jahre Viking.

How to dispose of bulk waste?

In March 2004, the giant got a new owner, First Olsen Tankers.
Different times have already come, and given the age of the tanker, they decided to convert it into a floating complex for storage and loading at the Dubai shipyards. After refitting, she received the name Knock Nevis, and was then deployed to the Al Shaheen field in Qatari waters.

In December 2009, the ship was sold for scrapping in India, and set off on its final journey under the name Mont. Its last photographs date back to January 2010, when the ship was laid up near the city of Alang (India) ready for disposal. Dismantling the largest ship in the world will last at least a year.

Giant monument to love

Of those acting for their intended purpose, the largest cargo ship is a ship Emma Maersk, built in 2006.

This fairly new ship is perhaps the world's largest monument to love. The giant container ship, capable of captivating even those far from technology, was named by the shipowner tycoon who built it in honor of his deceased wife.

The giant container ship is also equipped with the world's largest internal combustion engine. And the capacity of this vessel, estimated according to the standard scheme, is 13.5-14.5 thousand TEU (these units are equivalent to 20-foot containers).

Owner A.P. Moller-Maersk Group, 93-year-old Arnold Maersk McKinney Moller ( Arnold Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller), immortalized his wife Emma, who died in December 2005, in the supership. Arnold lived with Emma in love and harmony for 65 years.

Only numbers

Now Emma is a beautiful gray-blue ship, the parameters of which are truly amazing. The length of the ship is 397 meters, width - 56 meters, draft - 15.5 meters. Gross tonnage - 171 thousand tons (gross).
